Description of this Rocky I Poster
Rocky is a 1976 American sports drama film directed by John G. Avildsen, written and starring Sylvester Stallone. It is the first installment in the Rocky franchise, starring Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers and Burgess Meredith in the lead roles. In the film, Rocky Balboa (Stallone), a poor little club boxer and loan shark collector, is offered an unlikely chance to win the world heavyweight championship held by Apollo Creed (Weathers).
Rocky entered development in March 1975, with Stallone writing the script in three days. The production process became complicated after Stallone refused to allow the film to be made without him in the lead role; United Artists ultimately agreed to hire Stallone after he rejected a six-figure deal for the film rights. Principal photography began in January 1976, and filming took place primarily in Philadelphia; several locations featured in the film, such as Rocky's steps, are considered cultural landmarks today. With an estimated production budget of less than $1 million, Rocky popularized the themes of getting rich and the American dream of the sports dramas that preceded it.
Rocky premiered in New York on November 20, 1976, and was released in the United States on December 3, 1976. Rocky became the highest-grossing film of 1976, grossing approximately $225 million in the whole world. The film received critical acclaim for Stallone's writing, performance, story, as well as the film's direction, music, cinematography and editing; among other awards, it received ten Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Picture. It has been ranked by many publications as one of the greatest films of all time, as well as one of the most iconic sports films of all time.
Rocky and its theme song became a pop-cultural phenomenon and an important part of American popular culture of the 1970s. In 2006, the Library of Congress selected Rocky for preservation in the United States National Film Registry because of its "cultural, historical or aesthetic significance". The first sequel in the series, Rocky II, was released in 1979.
In 1975, Apollo Creed, world heavyweight boxing champion, announced his intention to stage a title fight in Philadelphia, to mark the bicentennial of the United States. However, he was informed five weeks before the fight date that his scheduled opponent, Mac Lee Green, could not compete due to a hand injury. With all the other potential replacements booked or unavailable, Creed decides to spice things up by giving a local competitor a chance to challenge him.
Creed chooses Rocky Balboa, an Italian-American sudpawman boxer who fights primarily in small gyms and works as a debt collector for a loan shark, based on his nickname: The Italian Stallion. Rocky meets with promoter George Jergens, who told him that Creed was looking for local training partners. At first reluctant, Rocky ends up accepting the fight which will earn him $150,000. Rocky undergoes unorthodox training for several weeks, including using pieces of beef as punching bags.
Rocky is then contacted by Mickey Goldmill, a former featherweight boxer turned trainer, whose gym Rocky frequents, to continue his training. Rocky is not very enthusiastic at first, as Mickey hasn't shown much interest in helping him before and considered him a wasted talent, but Rocky eventually accepts the offer.
Rocky begins to form a romantic relationship with Adrian Pennino, a shy woman who works part-time at the J&M Tropical Fish pet store. Adrian's brother and Rocky's best friend, Paulie, helps Rocky get a date with his sister and offers to work with him in the corner for the fight. Paulie becomes jealous of Rocky's success, but Rocky appeases him by agreeing to advertise the meatpacking company where Paulie works in the upcoming fight. Rocky trains intensively for the championship fight, but the night before the match he visits the Spectrum in Philadelphia and begins to lose confidence. He admits to Adrian that he doesn't think he can win, but strives to go the distance against Creed, something no other fighter has done, to prove himself to everyone.
On New Year's Day, the fight takes place and Creed makes a remarkable entrance, disguised as George Washington and then as Uncle Sam. Taking advantage of his excess confidence, Rocky knocks him out in the first round, a first for Creed. Humiliated and worried, Creed takes Rocky more seriously for the rest of the fight, although his ego never completely fades. The fight continued for fifteen rounds, with both fighters suffering various injuries. Rocky, hit in the head and with swollen eyes, must have his right eyelid cut off to regain his sight. Apollo, who is suffering from internal bleeding and a broken rib, is having trouble breathing. By the end of the fight, Creed's superiority is countered by Rocky's seemingly limitless ability to absorb blows and his stubborn refusal to give up. At the sound of the final bell, the two fighters embrace and promise that there will be no rematch.
After the fight, the sports journalists and the public went wild. Jergens announces over the loudspeaker that the fight was "the greatest display of guts and endurance in the history of the ring", and Rocky repeatedly calls out to Adrian, who rushes in and Paulie distracts security to help get into the ring. As Jergens declares Creed the winner by a split decision, Rocky and Adrian kiss and declare their love for each other, regardless of the outcome of the fight.
