Description of this Vichy Government Propaganda Poster
On this poster from 1942, we see in the center the glorification of Pétain as Father of the Fatherland. We see the French flag, the motto “Work, Family, Fatherland” which replaces “Liberty, equality, fraternity”.
This propaganda poster wants to show Pétain as the incarnation of national cohesion of the “Eternal France” type. We can find there the principles of his program of national revolution according to the motto expressed:
Work: It is expressed by work in the fields on the left, and by a blacksmith on the right (this is reminiscent of the sickle and hammer of the Soviet flag). This is a criticism of industrialization which has completely turned society upside down: Pétain advocates a return to so-called “classic” work in the fields.
Family: The marshal is indicated as protector of the family, protecting women and children, of whom we see a little girl holding a baby in her arms.
Homeland: We find the French flag as well as the Gallic rooster, indicating to the French that loving their homeland is their duty.
