Description of this THX 1138 Poster
THX 1138 is a 1971 American science fiction film, co-written and directed by George Lucas in his directorial debut. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola and co-written by Walter Murch, the film stars Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence, with Don Pedro Colley, Maggie McOmie and Ian Wolfe in supporting roles. The film is set in a dystopian future where the population is controlled by android police officers and the compulsory use of emotion-suppressing drugs.
THX 1138 was developed from Lucas' 1967 student film Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, made by Lucas while studying at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The feature film was produced as a joint venture between Warner Bros. and American Zoetrope. A novelization of Ben Bova was published in 1971.
The film received mixed reception from critics and was unsuccessful upon its initial release, but it subsequently received critical acclaim and achieved cult status, particularly following the success of Lucas with Star Wars (1977). A director's cut prepared by Lucas was released in 2004.
In this dystopian future, sexual intercourse and reproduction are prohibited, while the use of psychotropic drugs is mandatory to force citizens to comply with the law and to ensure their ability to perform dangerous and demanding tasks. Emotions and the concept of family are taboo. The workers are dressed in identical white uniforms and have shaved heads to emphasize uniformity, as do the police androids who wear black and the monks who are clad in robes. Instead of names, people have designations consisting of three arbitrary letters (called a "prefix") and four numbers, appearing on an identity badge worn at all times.
SEN 5241 and LUH 3417, who work in video control centers, monitor the city. LUH has a male roommate, THX 1138, who works in a factory producing android police officers. As the story begins, THX is winding down its shift as loudspeakers urge workers to "step up safety" and congratulate them on losing only 195 workers in the last period, to the factory's benefit concurrent 242.
On the way home, he stops at a confession booth in a row of several, and recounts his concerns and mutters prayers about the "party" and the "masses", under the portrait of Jesus Christ from "OMM 0000". A soothing voice greets THX and OMM ends the confession with a farewell greeting: "You are a true believer, blessing of the state, blessing of the masses. Work hard, increase production, avoid accidents and be happy."
At home, THX does drugs and watches holobiological shows while masturbating. LUH secretly replaces THX's medications with pills she has in her possession, causing him to experience nausea, anxiety, and sexual desires. LUH and THX become romantic and have sex. THX is then confronted by SEN, who tries to get THX to become his new roommate, but THX files a complaint against SEN for the illegal team change.
Without drugs in his system, THX falters during a critical and dangerous phase of his work, and a control center initiates a "mind lock" on THX, increasing the level of danger. After the mind lock is lifted, THX provides the necessary correction to this phase of work. THX and LUH are stopped, THX is put on drug therapy, and one of his kidneys is removed for donation. He enjoys a brief meeting with LUH, interrupted shortly after she reveals her pregnancy.
During THX's trial, it is stated that THX was born clinically. It is decided that it would be ineffective to end the existence of THX, who is therefore sentenced to prison, alongside SEN. The prison appears to be an entirely white space, without any walls. One of the prisoners is a "shell dweller", later called a "Wookiee". The other prisoners don't seem to want to escape. THX and SEN walk looking for an exit. They walk again and again, seeing only white space around them. They are eventually joined by the hologram of actor SRT 5752, who starred in the holocasts. SRT 5752 shows them the exit and suggests that they may have gone in circles. During the escape, THX and SRT are separated from SEN. Pursued by police robots, THX and SRT are trapped in a control center, from where THX learns that LUH has been "consumed", and that her name has been reassigned to her fetus, numbered 66691, in a room of growth. SEN eventually escapes to an area reserved for OMM monks, where a monk notices that SEN does not have an ID badge. SEN attacks him, then goes to a children's education area, starts a conversation with them, and sits aimlessly until police androids apprehend him. THX and SRT steal two cars. SRT has a hard time understanding how to drive the car. When SRT finally manages to get the car moving, he immediately crashes into a concrete pillar.
Pursued by two police androids on motorcycles, THX flees to the city limits and escapes into an air vent. The police androids pursue him on motorcycles along the shaft to an escape ladder, but Central Command orders them to cease the chase, on the grounds that the expense of capturing him exceeds THX's budget. The guards inform THX that the surface is uninhabitable in a last-ditch attempt to convince him to surrender, but he is undeterred and continues up the ventilation shaft. We then discover that the city is entirely underground and that THX has escaped to the surface, where he witnesses the sunset.
