Description of this Poster The End of History

The Neverending Story II is a German-American fantasy film directed by George Trumbull Miller and released in 1990. It is the second adaptation of the novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende and the sequel to the film of the same name released in 1984. The premiere of the film took place on October 25, 1990 in Germany.

Bastian would like to be part of his school's swim team. To do this, he has to jump from the top of a diving board, which scares him. He goes to Koreander's second-hand bookstore again to borrow a guide on courage, when he discovers the book "The Neverending Story" which he knows well and hears the Childish Empress call him: Phantásien is in danger and Bastian absolutely must help him. The boy grabs the book and lands back in Phantania.

There he meets a talking bird in human form called Nimbly. He also finds his friend Atréju. They quickly become acquainted with the "giants" who begin to destroy Phantásia. It is only thanks to the rock biter, who complains that the stones are no longer good to eat because they are hollow, that Bastian understands that the void extends into Phantásia. He is provoked by the dark witch Xayíde, who wants to seize power over Phantásia. To prevent Bastian from being saved, Xayíde's inventor, Dreigesicht, developed a device that allows Bastian to lose a memory with every wish the Auryn Amulet grants him. Their spy Nimbly must therefore persuade Bastian to make as many wishes as possible, until he loses all his memories and no longer knows why he came to Phantania.

Bastian and Atréju go looking for Xayíde and finally manage to capture her. She agrees to accompany the two boys to the Empress as a child and seems to give up her quest for power. However, on the way to the Ivory Tower, Atréju notices that they are only going in circles and not approaching the tower at all. Bastian however thinks that this is not true, as the landscape has changed, and becomes increasingly engaged with Xayíde, who of course has not abandoned his goals and is instead trying to convince Bastian to follow through with the ridiculous wishes to steal his memories.

Meanwhile, Bastian's father notices his son missing. In the boy's room he finds the book - and on the front cover, a sticker with the address of the Koreander used bookstore. He rushes into the store to confront the owner with the book, but when Koreander opens it, the sticker is gone. The father leaves the store again. When he later returns to the used bookstore, he only finds an empty store that has apparently been abandoned for some time; no trace of Koreander. The father takes his way back. Along the way, the book is opened by chance and the father discovers that a chapter begins with his son's name, which inspires him to read the book. He quickly understands that he is reading his son's story and doesn't put the book down.

In the meantime, Atréju discovered what Xayíde intended to do. This, in turn, persuaded Bastian that Atréju was jealous of him. That's why he doesn't believe him when Atreju tells him the truth. During a fight between the two, Atréju falls from a rock and remains inert. Shortly after, Bastian himself discovers the device containing his own memories - he only has two left, his mother's and his father's. To bring Atréju back to life, he sacrifices his penultimate memory. During the final battle, when Xayíde has almost reached the end of her desires, Bastian also uses his last wish: he wishes that Xayíde had a heart. Thanks to this wish, Xayide and all his giants are destroyed. Bastian recovers his memories and Phantásia is saved.

To be able to return to his world, he must now jump off a high cliff. With the help of his father, who violently encourages him by reading the book, which Bastian can hear, he succeeds in the jump.
