“The Drum” is a masterful film adaptation of the eponymous novel by Günter Grass, directed by Volker Schlöndorff. Released in 1979, the film transports us to Nazi Germany through the eyes of Oskar Matzerath, a young boy with a mature perception of the world from birth. The story begins in the 1920s, in Danzig, where Oskar, the protagonist, decides at the age of three to stop growing in protest against the injustice of the world around him.
The story then follows the evolution of Oskar, played remarkably by David Bennent, through the tumults of German history, from the advent of Nazism to the Second World War. The drum, his favorite instrument, becomes a powerful symbol, used to express his silent revolt and observe the world with extraordinary acuity.
