Description of this Poster The Red Circle
Le Cercle rouge is a 1970 crime film set primarily in Paris. It was directed by Jean-Pierre Melville and stars Alain Delon, André Bourvil, Gian Maria Volonté, François Périer and Yves Montand. It is known for its climax heist sequence, which lasts about half an hour and features virtually no dialogue.
The title of the film means "The Red Circle" and refers to the film's epigraph which translates as:
Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, drew a circle with red chalk and said: "When men, even without knowing it, must meet one day, whatever happens to each, whatever the divergent paths, that day- there they will inevitably meet in the red circle.
In Marseille, a prisoner named Corey is released prematurely for good behavior. Shortly before his departure, a prison guard alerts him to a prestigious jewelry store that he could rob in Paris. Corey goes to Rico, a former associate who dumped him and with whom his former girlfriend now lives, and forcibly takes money and a handgun from Rico's safe. He then goes to a pool hall, where two of Rico's men find him. After killing one, knocking out the other and taking his gun, Corey buys a large American car and, hiding the two handguns in the trunk, leaves for Paris. Along the way, listening to jazz and news on the radio, he runs into a police roadblock.
The same morning, another prisoner, Vogel, who was to take the train from Marseille to Paris to be interrogated by the highly respected commissioner Mattei, managed to escape into the open countryside. Vogel is pursued and escapes Mattei, who orders roadblocks set up and supervises the manhunt. Meanwhile, Corey, who understands the stakes of this gigantic police activity, stops at a roadside grill in the epicenter of the manhunt, leaving his car trunk unlocked. Vogel crosses a stream to keep the dogs off his trail, reaches the grill, and hides in the trunk of Corey's car.
Corey, who saw him and was just waiting for this, goes into a field and tells Vogel that he can come out because he is safe. After a tense confrontation during which Vogel brandishes one of Corey's weapons, he realizes that the latter has just been released from prison that morning and that he is trying to save him. The two men leave in the car with Vogel in the trunk. Shortly after, a car with two of Rico's men catches up with Corey and forces him off the road. They take him into the woods, take his money and are about to kill him when Vogel, coming out of the trunk with the guns, shoots them both.
Corey takes Vogel to his empty apartment in Paris, where they begin planning the aforementioned heist. For this, they need a sniper to disable the security system with a single shot and a fence to buy the goods. Meanwhile, Mattei tries to locate the killer of Rico's men and recapture Vogel. To do this, he puts pressure on Santi, a nightclub owner who knows much of the underworld, but who refuses to talk.
Corey recruits Jansen, an alcoholic former police officer and sniper, as well as a fence. Over the course of a long night, Corey, with Vogel and Jansen's support, successfully robs the jewelry store. However, the fence refuses to take the goods, after being warned by a vengeful Rico, who had been inadvertently told by the prison warden all along that Corey was on the case.
Overcoming their disappointment, Jansen and Vogel suggest that Corey ask Santi to recommend a new fence. Mattei blackmails Santi for information about the meeting planned that evening at his nightclub, where Corey is supposed to meet the fence. Mattei, posing as the receiver, asks Corey to take the goods to a country house.
Corey complies, taking Jansen as backup and leaving Vogel at his apartment, who received the red rose that Corey had received from the florist at Santi's. When Corey arrives at the country house and begins to show Mattei the jewels, Vogel appears out of nowhere, probably because he suspects that Corey is not safe with this new fence, and asks Corey to run away. with the loot. After a brief, tense confrontation with Mattei, Vogel follows Corey. Jansen, alerted by the gunshots in the manor grounds now filled with police, arrives to arrest the pursuers. One after the other, the three men are shot dead by Mattei's agents, who recover the jewels.
