Description of this Rollerball Poster
“Rollerball” is a cult science fiction film released in 1975, directed by Norman Jewison. The story takes place in a dystopian future where corporations have taken over the world, relegating governments to the background. To maintain the pacification of society, the corporations established a brutal game called Rollerball.
Rollerball is a violent sport, a mixture of roller derby, hockey and boxing, played on a circular track. Players wear armor and participate in matches where violence is encouraged, even necessary. Jonathan E., played by James Caan, is the captain of the Houston team, the Houston Rollerballers. He becomes a sporting legend, but his popularity begins to worry corporate leaders who wish to maintain total control over society.
As Jonathan excels in Rollerball, the stakes become more complex. The corporations try to manipulate him and make him give up his career, but Jonathan refuses to bend to their will. He begins to question the established order and search for the real meaning of Rollerball.
The film explores deep themes such as individual freedom, media manipulation, corporate control, and resistance in the face of an oppressive system. The plot is supported by a dark and oppressive atmosphere, reinforced by a powerful soundtrack by André Previn.
