Description of this Robocop 2 Poster
RoboCop 2 is a 1990 American science fiction action film directed by Irvin Kershner and written by Frank Miller and Walon Green. It stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Dan O'Herlihy, Belinda Bauer, Tom Noonan and Gabriel Damon. It is the sequel to the 1987 film RoboCop, the second installment in the RoboCop franchise, the last to feature Weller as RoboCop, and the last film Kershner directed before his death in 2010.
The plot, set in a dystopian Detroit, follows RoboCop (Weller) who becomes embroiled in a plan by Omni Consumer Products to bankrupt the city and take control of it, while battling the spread of a street drug and its gang of dealers led by Cain (Noonan). The film was shot in Houston.
Although receiving mixed reviews, the film gained media attention in 2013 due to its plot predicting Detroit's bankruptcy in the future. It was nominated for three Saturn Awards, including Best Science Film. fiction, best performance by a young actor (for Damon) and best special effects (for Phil Tippett, Rob Bottin and Peter Kuran). A sequel, RoboCop 3, was released in 1993.
In a dystopian near future, Detroit is near bankruptcy after failing to repay its debts to the conglomerate Omni Consumer Products (OCP). The OCP President intends to bankrupt the city on its debt, then seize all public property, effectively take over its government, and enable OCP's radical and ongoing urban redevelopment plan (as 'established in the first film). To rally public opinion behind the plan, the OCP deliberately sparked an increase in street crime by ending the Detroit Police Department's privatized pension plans and cutting salaries, triggering a police strike.
RoboCop remains in service with his partner, Anne Lewis. They raid a factory manufacturing Nuke, a new brand-name drug plaguing Detroit. Cartel leader Cain and his prepubescent accomplice Hob escape. RoboCop has flashbacks to his previous life as Alex Murphy and began watching his wife and son in front of their new home. Still mourning the death of her husband, his wife filed a complaint against OCP, complaining of harassment. After his handlers dress him up, RoboCop tells his wife that Murphy is dead and that he doesn't know her.
OCP is struggling to develop RoboCop 2, a police droid equipped with the brains of legally deceased police officers, intended for mass production to replace striking police forces. Resurrected cops continue to commit suicide upon activation. Morally sharp psychologist Dr. Juliette Faxx theorizes that Murphy's strong moral code and strict Catholic upbringing were essential in his initial success; she convinces the president to let her run the project to recoup their $90 million research and development investment. The research staff is later horrified to learn that she is seeking to use death row inmates, who desire power and immortality, rather than police officers.
Cain fears losing his grip after the Delta City project and uses corrupt police officer Duffy to undermine OCP and RoboCop's law enforcement efforts. RoboCop finds Duffy and violently confronts him, revealing Cain's hiding place. He confronts Cain's gang at an abandoned construction site, but he walks into a trap and is overwhelmed. The criminals cut up RoboCop's body and threw the pieces in front of his neighborhood. Cain has Duffy vivisected for revealing their location and encourages Hob to watch.
RoboCop is repaired, but Faxx intentionally reprograms him with new, looser guidelines with the approval of the PCO board that severely hamper his ability to perform his duties so that his project can be selected. RoboCop eventually erases them by shocking himself with a high voltage transformer and restarting his system. Murphy motivates the striking officers to help him attack Cain's hideout. As Cain tries to escape, RoboCop injures and apprehends him. Hob escapes and takes control of Cain's drug empire. Believing she can control Cain via his addiction to Nuke, Faxx selects him for the RoboCop 2 project and disconnects his life support. Surgeons place his brain in a heavily armed robotic body, similar to ED-209, and reactivate it.
After failing to pay the city's debts through a voluntary fundraiser, the mayor is contacted by Hob, who offers to remove all of the city's debt in exchange for a "hands free" policy. " towards Nuke, thus canceling OCP's program and preventing the construction of Delta City. Threatened by this decision, OCP sends Cain to the meeting. Cain kills everyone except the mayor, who escapes. RoboCop arrives to find an injured Hob, who identifies the attacker before dying.
The President presents an unveiling ceremony for Cain and Delta City, their redevelopment plan. When he presents a can of Nuke, Cain's uncontrollable addiction causes him to disobey his programming and murder numerous civilians and police officers. RoboCop arrives and fights Cain, and their battle spills out onto the streets. RoboCop retrieves the Nuke Canister and Lewis uses it to distract Cain. RoboCop jumps on his back, pulls armor on him, rips out his brain and smashes it on the ground, ending Cain's rampage. The President and Johnson decide to use Dr. Faxx as a scapegoat for Cain's attack. As Lewis complains that OCP is going to avoid responsibility again, RoboCop insists that they need to be patient because "we're only human."
