Description of this Requiem For A Dream Poster

Requiem for a Dream is a 2000 American film, based on the 1978 Hubert Selby Jr novel of the same name. It was directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly and Marlon Wayans. Ellen Burstyn was nominated for the Academy Awards in the Best Actress category.

The film tells the story of Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), his mother Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), his girlfriend Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly), and his friend Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans). The story is divided into three seasons: summer, autumn and winter.

The story begins in summer with Sara, a widow who lives in an apartment in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Sara spends most of her time sitting watching television commercials and a competition show. Her other entertainment is food, which has left her (according to her) overweight. Her son Harry only visits her apartment to pawn the television and thus finance his heroin addiction.

When Harry's mother receives an alleged call from the Malin & Block television studio, her life changes completely. She thinks she was invited to participate in her favorite competition program. Sara begins a diet in order to reclaim her red dress (which she used years ago at Harry's graduation) to look elegant on television. However, the diet does not convince her and, recommended by a friend, she goes to a dubious doctor, who prescribes diet pills, which Sara begins to take (without knowing that they are amphetamines) to speed up the process . Harry, visiting, realizes the cause of his mother's strange behavior (a kind of euphoria and bruxism) and asks her to stop taking the pills. Sara explains that the death and loneliness of Harry's father affected her too much, and that losing weight to put on her red dress became her only reason to live.

Meanwhile, Harry and Tyrone begin working as drug dealers. Harry and Marion plan to open a store with the money they earn to sell their creations. Tyrone, on the other hand, sees this success as an opportunity to escape the difficult life on the streets.

When fall arrives, Sara becomes more dependent on her pills and doubles her dose, beginning to hallucinate. In some hallucinations, she is seen as a guest on the TV show. On the other hand, Tyrone is arrested, while Brody, who supplied them with the drugs, is killed by a rival gang. Harry and Marion use the money they saved to bail Tyrone out of prison. As the months pass, drug trafficking becomes more difficult without someone being able to supply it. Additionally, Harry and Marion's relationship worsens when they forget their future plans due to lack of drugs.

Tyrone receives information about a shipment of drugs that would arrive at Christmas, so he decides to go with Harry to buy. When he arrives, the riots begin and the dealer runs away next to the drugs. Meanwhile, Marion destroys her creations and some objects around the house as a result of withdrawal syndrome.

Sara, who has increased her doses of pills, suffers from increasingly intense hallucinations. In her visions, the presenter of the program, the helpers and even an image of herself, make fun of her condition. Also see how the refrigerator, transformed into a kind of monster, tries to catch him. Sara loses her mind and leaves her house heading to the TV studio to find out why they haven't called her yet.

During the winter, Harry and Tyrone travel to Florida, hoping to find drugs more easily. Harry discovers that his arm has been infected because of the injections that were applied. When Harry's condition worsens, they decide to go to the hospital for help. The doctor realizes that the addiction is suffering and calls the police.

Meanwhile, Marion visits Big Tim (Keith David), who will give her drugs in exchange for sex. After receiving heroin, Big Tim informs him of a party on Sunday, where he can receive more drugs.

Sara is hospitalized in a mental health clinic. At the hospital, she is treated indifferently by officials. A doctor tries to communicate with her, but is unable to form coherent sentences.

The climax of the story shows how each character's dreams crumble and come to tragic ends when they enter the world of drugs. Harry's arm is amputated because his infection has turned into gangrene; Sara receives electroshock therapy which ends up alienating her from reality; Tyrone remains in prison, where he must work and receive insults from the guards; and Marion goes to Big Tim's party, where he has anal sex with another woman while a group of men surround them.

Each character, lost in misery, falls into the fetal position. In Sara's final hallucination we can see that she wins the grand prize of the show and meets Harry there, now Harry is a successful businessman and committed to Marion. Sara and Harry kiss and tell each other how much they love each other, as the crowd at the shows applauds them.
