Description of this Willow Poster

Willow is a 1988 American adventure film directed by Ron Howard and produced by Nigel Wooll. The film was produced by George Lucas and written by Bob Dolman from a story by Lucas. The film stars Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Warwick Davis and Jean Marsh. Davis plays the title character, an aspiring magician who teams up with a penniless warrior (Kilmer) to protect a baby from an evil queen (Marsh).

Lucas conceived the idea for the film in 1972 and approached Howard about directing it during the post-production phase of Cocoon in 1985. Bob Dolman was hired to write the screenplay, with seven drafts before finishing it in late 1986. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was then responsible for writing the script and principal photography began in April 1987 and was completed in October of the same year. The majority of filming took place at Dinorwic Quarry in Wales, some at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, as well as a small part in New Zealand. Industrial Light & Magic created the visual effects sequences, which enabled a revolutionary breakthrough in digital morphing technology.

The film was released in 1988 and received mixed reception from critics, with some praising the special effects and character designs while others criticizing the direction and plot. It grossed $137.6 million worldwide on a budget of $35 million. Although it was not the blockbuster that some expected, the film was profitable thanks to international box office receipts and strong results from home video and television. Additionally, he received two Academy Award nominations. A television series which is the sequel to the film was broadcast on Disney+ in 2022.

In an unnamed fantasy world, the evil witch queen Bavmorda of Nockmaar hears of a prophecy that a child bearing a special rune at birth will be her downfall. As a preventative measure, she imprisons all pregnant women in her domain. The predicted child is born, but his mother persuades the midwife to smuggle him out of the castle. Bavmorda executes the mother and sends his wolf-like Nockmaar dogs after the midwife. As the dogs close in on her, the midwife causes the baby to drift on a raft of grass in a river before succumbing to the dogs. Meanwhile, Bavmorda sends his daughter Sorsha and an army led by General Kael to search for the baby.

Some distance downstream, a village of Nelwyn (a race of dwarves) prepares for a feast. The baby is found by the children of farmer and aspiring wizard Willow Ufgood and her family takes him in and loves him. At the party, a Nockmaar dog arrives and attacks every crib he finds. After Nelwyn's warriors kill him, Willow presents the baby to the village chief, High Aldwin, as the likely reason for the dog's appearance. Great Aldwin orders the baby returned to a Daikini family (the name given by the Nelwyns to "tall people"), and Willow and a group of volunteers leave with the baby in search of a family.

At a crossroads, they find Madmartigan, a mercenary trapped in a crow cage, who offers to take the baby in exchange for his freedom. The majority of the Nelwyns think they should give her the baby, but Willow and her friend Meegosh refuse, causing the others to abandon them and return home. After meeting Madmartigan's old comrade Airk, en route with an army to attack Bavmorda, Willow relents and accepts Madmartigan's terms.

On the way home, Willow and Meegosh discover that brownies have stolen the baby and are chasing them. They are captured by the brownies, but the fairy queen Cherlindrea frees them and explains that the baby is Elora Danan, the heralded princess of Tir Asleen. She gives Willow a magic wand and sends her to find Fin Raziel, an aging enchantress.

Willow sends Meegosh home and continues her journey in the company of two brownies, Franjean and Rool. On the way, he meets Madmartigan again, who disguises himself as a woman to hide from Llug, his mistress's husband. Sorsha and Kael's army arrives, but Madmartigan reveals himself to be a man in Llug's eyes, which sparks a fight that allows Willow and Madmartigan to escape with Elora.

Madmartigan, seemingly reluctantly, leads Willow to the lake where Raziel lives. They are captured soon after, along with Raziel, who has been transformed into a brush-tailed possum by Bavmorda. Willow tries to bring her back to life, but Bavmorda turns her into a tower.

Franjean accidentally gives Madmartigan a dose of love potion. Madmartigan declares his undying love for Sorsha, but she is skeptical. Willow's group flees, finding Airk and the remains of his army after Bavmorda defeats them. When Nockmaar's army pursues them, Madmartigan takes Sorsha hostage and they flee again. But Sorsha escapes.

Willow's group arrives in Tir Asleen, but the town is cursed and overrun by trolls. Kael's army arrives, and Madmartigan and Willow try to repel them. Willow accidentally transforms a troll into a two-headed Eborsisk monster using her wand, and in the ensuing chaos, Kael kidnaps Elora. Sorsha, realizing that she has fallen in love with Madmartigan, sides with him. Airk's army arrives, but Kael, carrying Elora on horseback, passes through them and goes to Nockmaar Castle. Bavmorda orders the preparation of a ritual to banish Elora from the world forever.

Willow's group and Airk's army arrive at Nockmaar Castle, but Bavmorda casts a spell that turns them all into pigs. Willow, who used the wand to protect herself, finally returns Raziel to his human form. She breaks the spell that Bavmorda has cast on the army and they trickfully enter the castle. Kael kills Airk, but Madmartigan avenges him, while Willow, Sorsha and Raziel confront Bavmorda in the ritual chamber. After an exhausting fight, Bavmorda incapacitates Raziel and Sorsha. Willow uses sleight of hand to make Bavmorda believe that he made Elora disappear. Bavmorda, disturbed, prepares to attack him, but in doing so he accidentally completes the ritual and banishes himself.

During the celebrations at Tir Asleen, Willow receives a spell book from Raziel. Leaving Elora in the care of Madmartigan and Sorsha, Willow returns home to his village and family in triumph.
