Description of this Poster The Laureate

The Graduate is a 1967 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Mike Nichols and written by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham, based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Charles Webb, who wrote it shortly after his graduation at Williams College. The film tells the story of 21-year-old Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), a recent college graduate with no clear goal in life, who is seduced by an older married woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), but then falls in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).

The Graduate was released on December 21, 1967, to critical and commercial success, grossing $104.9 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 1967. Adjusted for inflation (as of 2021), the film grossed $857 million, making it the 23rd highest-grossing film in North America, adjusting for inflation. The film received seven nominations at the 40th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won Best Director. In 1996, The Graduate was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry due to its cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance. It is currently (as of the 2007 ranking) ranked by the American Film Institute as the 17th greatest American film of all time, having been ranked 7th in 1997.

After earning his bachelor's degree from an East Coast university, Benjamin Braddock returned to his parents in Pasadena, California. During the graduation evening, he is invited to join a company specializing in plastic, the material of the future. Benjamin is embarrassed by his parents' praise during the party and retreats to his room until Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father's business partner, insists that he accompany her home. Once there, she tries to seduce him. He initially resists her advances, but her failed attempts to get closer to his parents make him feel isolated. Desperate, he invites Mrs. Robinson to the Taft Hotel, where he registers under the pseudonym "Mr. Gladstone."

Benjamin spends the summer floating in his parents' pool by day and meeting Mrs. Robinson at the hotel at night. During one of their romps, Mrs. Robinson reveals that her loveless marriage ended in an accidental pregnancy of her daughter, Elaine. When Benjamin jokingly suggests going out with Elaine, Mrs. Robinson angrily forbids him. However, Benjamin's parents, who are unaware of the affair, are eager for their son to date Elaine and relentlessly pester him to ask her out, just like Mr. Robinson. Benjamin gives in and, reluctantly, asks Elaine out.

When he sees how upset Mrs. Robinson is, Benjamin attempts to sabotage her date by ignoring Elaine, driving recklessly, and taking her to a strip club. She runs away from the club in tears, but Benjamin, overcome with remorse, runs after her, apologizes and kisses her. They eat at a drive-thru, where they become closer due to the uncertainty they share about their future plans. After they go to the Taft Hotel for late night drinks and the staff greets Benjamin as "Mr. Gladstone", Elaine deduces that Benjamin is having an affair with a married woman. Benjamin swears this affair is over and plans another meeting with Elaine for the next day.

To prevent Benjamin from dating Elaine, Mrs. Robinson threatens to reveal their affair to Elaine. To thwart this threat, Benjamin reveals to Elaine that the married woman is his mother. Elaine is so upset that she refuses to see Benjamin again and returns to school in Berkeley.

Benjamin follows her to Berkeley in hopes of winning back her affections. Elaine is stunned because her mother told her that Benjamin raped her while she was drunk. After Benjamin explains what really happened and apologizes, Elaine forgives him and they resume their relationship. He asks her to marry him, but she hesitates despite the feelings she has for him. Later, an angry Mr. Robinson arrives in Berkeley and confronts Benjamin in his boarding school room, where he informs him that he and his wife are soon to divorce, and threatens to have Benjamin imprisoned if he continues to see Elaine. . He then forces Elaine to leave college to marry Carl Smith, a classmate she briefly dated.

Benjamin returns to Pasadena and breaks into the Robinson house looking for Elaine. Instead, he finds Mrs. Robinson calling the police and claiming her house has been broken into. She then tells Benjamin that he cannot stop Elaine's marriage to Carl. Before the police can arrest him, Benjamin flees the Robinson house and returns to Berkeley. He visits Carl's fraternity and learns from one of Carl's brothers that the wedding will take place in Santa Barbara that day. He rushes to the area near the church, when his Alfa Romeo runs out of gas, forcing him to jog towards the church, where he arrives just as the ceremony ends. Overlooking the sanctuary, he punches the glass that separates him from the wedding and shouts Elaine's name. After looking at the angry faces of Carl and his parents, Elaine shouts "Ben!" and fled from the sanctuary. Benjamin fights Mr. Robinson and fends off the wedding guests by swinging a large cross, which he uses to barricade the church doors and trap them inside. Elaine and Benjamin escape on a bus and sit among the surprised passengers. As the bus moves on, their ecstatic smiles slowly fade, as they begin to contemplate an uncertain future.
