Description of this The Little Mermaid Poster

The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated film, produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It is Disney's 28th animated film. It is loosely based on the Danish fairy tale of the same name written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. The film tells the story of a teenage mermaid princess named Ariel, who dreams of becoming human and falls in love with a human prince named Eric , which leads him to make a magical deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to become human and be with him. The Little Mermaid was written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and produced by Musker and Howard Ashman, who also wrote the film's songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film's music. The film stars the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Pat Carroll, Samuel E. Wright, Jason Marin, Kenneth Mars and Buddy Hackett.

Walt Disney had planned to incorporate the story into a film project featuring Andersen's stories, but abandoned the project. In 1985, while working on The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Clements and Musker decided to adapt the fairy tale and proposed it to Disney Studios chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, who first declined due to its similarities to a proposed sequel to the 1984 film Splash, but ultimately approved it. Ashman got involved and brought in Menken. Under Katzenberg's supervision, they achieved a Broadway-style structure with musical numbers as the team worked on Oliver & Company (1988). Katzenberg warned that the film would gross less since it was aimed at women, but he eventually convinced himself that it would be Disney's first blockbuster.

The Little Mermaid was released theatrically on November 17, 1989, to critical acclaim, who praised the animation, music, and characters. It was also a commercial success, grossing $84 million at the domestic box office upon its initial release[4] and grossing $235 million in lifetime earnings worldwide.[3] Besides the major success of the 1986 Disney animated film, The Great Mouse Detective[5][6], and the 1988 Disney/Amblin action/animated film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid has credited with bringing the art of Disney animated feature films back to life after some Disney-produced films struggled. It also marked the beginning of the era known as the Disney Renaissance.[7] The film won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Under the Ocean").

The success of the film gave rise to a media franchise. A direct-to-video sequel was released in 2000, focusing on Ariel's daughter Melody. A prequel followed in 2008. The first film was adapted into a musical with a book by Doug Wright[8] and additional songs by Alan Menken and new lyricist Glenn Slater. It premiered in Denver in July 2007 and the first performances were on Broadway on January 10, 2008.[9][10] starring Sierra Boggess.[11][12][13]

Other derivative works and material inspired by the film include a live-action film adaptation, directed by Rob Marshall, currently scheduled for release in 2023, and a live musical presentation of the film in 2019, broadcast on ABC as part of The Wonderful World of Disney.

In 2022, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress because it is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
