Description of this Law Poster

La Loi is a 1958 film directed by Jules Dassin, based on the novel of the same name La loi by Roger Vailland.

In a small town in Corsica, the stories of different characters intertwine: Don Cesare is a kind of local gentleman, passionate about ancient art, he has Tonio at his service with whom he has married Giulia, his servant and former lover; Marietta, Maria's youngest daughter, lives in Don Cesare's house with her mother and her sisters Marta and Elvira, the man appreciates her for her rebellious and independent character, she loves Enrico the agronomist recently arrived from the continent but before marrying him, she would like to become rich; police commissioner Attilio, married with two daughters, has a clandestine relationship with Giuseppina, friend of his wife Anna; Woman Lucrezia, the unhappy wife of the judge, has recently started a relationship with the young Francesco Brigante, a law student: Matteo Brigante, father of Francesco, he believes he can have everything and everyone by imposing his "law" above all on Tonio with Pizzaccio's help, the only one not to give up is Marietta.

During the patronal festival, Enrico witnesses the cruel humiliation of Tonio victim of the game of "law" of Matteo Brigante and Pizzaccio, Marietta manages to steal a wallet full of money from a Swiss tourist and one of her friends kidnaps her knife to Matteo while Donna Lucrezia gets help from Giuseppina to give a message to young Francesco. The next day, Marietta surprises Enrico by declaring herself in love but wants to become his wife and not his lover, Francesco and Lucrezia meet secretly and decide to leave together.

Matteo tries to seduce Marietta but the girl does not give in and rubs him with her knife, then hides the Swiss's empty wallet in his jacket. The man returns to the village but first warns Pizzaccio that no villager should comment on his injury. On the beach, the man discovers a message for his son brought by Giuseppina and forces him to reveal the identity of the woman and her plans, the next day they will take the bus to Bastia never to return to the country. When the bus leaves, Matteo intimidates his son who ultimately decides not to leave and Lucrezia finds herself alone. In the meantime, Enrico confides in Marietta, he considers himself poor and does not want to face married life without money and the happy girl shows him the money he took from the Swiss but the young man forces them to return them but she must first return to Don Cesare who had an illness.

Dingent Caesar informs the girl that he will bequeath her house and convinces her to return the stolen money. Shortly after, the judge, the commissioner and handcuffed Brigante showed up, the man was arrested for theft but he in turn accused Marietta. Don Cesare returns the money saying they were found by one of his farmers in the swamp and has Matteo humiliated in the game of law run by Marietta and Tonio. He also has harsh words for the commissioner while giving an ancient vase to the judge, the only one who deserves respect.

The evening Donna Lucrezia returns to find Matteo waiting for her, the man takes her to her house with the intention of seducing her but the woman, who at first seems to give in, throws herself from the balcony. Almost at the same time, Don Cesare also dies. The next day, Francesco leaves, and even the old friends turn their backs on Matteo Brigante who will no longer be able to "the law" while Marietta takes possession of the house where she will live with Enrico whom she will marry shortly.
