Description of this Jungle Book Poster
The Jungle Book is a 1967 American animated musical comedy produced by Walt Disney Productions. Based on the book of the same title written by Rudyard Kipling in 1894, it is Disney's 19th animated film. Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it is the last film produced by Walt Disney, who died during its production, and the first animated feature film released after his death. The plot follows Mowgli, a wild child raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, as his friends Bagheera, the panther, and Baloo, the bear, try to convince him to leave the jungle before the arrival of the evil tiger Shere Khan.
Early versions of the screenplay and soundtrack followed Kipling's work more closely, with a dramatic, dark and sinister tone that Disney did not want in its family film, leading to the replacement of screenwriter Bill Peet and the composer Terry Gilkyson. The cast included famous actors and musicians like Phil Harris, Sebastian Cabot, George Sanders and Louis Prima, as well as Disney regulars like Sterling Holloway, J. Pat O'Malley and Verna Felton, and the son of director, Bruce Reitherman, as Mowgli.
The Jungle Book was released on October 18, 1967, and received positive reception, with praise for its soundtrack, including five songs by the Sherman Brothers and one by Gilkyson, "It Takes a Little to Be Happy". With grossing $23.8 million worldwide, the film became the second highest-grossing Disney animated film in the United States and Canada,[3] the ninth highest-grossing film of 1967, and was also a success during its reissues. The film was also a success worldwide, becoming Germany's highest-grossing film in terms of admissions.[4] Disney released a live-action adaptation in 1994 and an animated sequel, The Jungle Book 2, in 2003; a live-action/CGI hybrid remake directed by Jon Favreau was released in 2016, with a sequel to that film in development.
