Description of this Poster The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back (also known as Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back) is a 1980 American epic space opera film directed by Irvin Kershner from a screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, based on a story by George Lucas. The sequel to Star Wars (1977)[b] is the second film in the Star Wars series and the fifth chronological chapter in the "Skywalker Saga". Set three years after the events of Star Wars, the film chronicles the battle between the malevolent Galactic Empire, led by the Emperor, and the Rebel Alliance, led by Princess Leia. Luke Skywalker trains to master the Force so he can face the powerful Sith Lord, Darth Vader. The cast includes Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew and Frank Oz.

After the success of Star Wars, Lucas hired Brackett to write the sequel. After the latter's death in 1978, he sketched the broad outlines of the Star Wars saga and wrote the next version himself, before hiring Kasdan, the screenwriter of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), to improve his work. To avoid the stress of making Star Wars, Lucas put Kershner in charge and focused on developing his special effects company Industrial Light & Magic. Filmed from March to September 1979 in Finse, Norway, and Elstree Studios, England, The Empire Strikes Back suffered production difficulties, including cast injuries, illnesses, and fires, as well as problems to obtain additional funding as costs increased. Initially budgeted at $8 million, costs reached $30.5 million by the end of the project.

Released on May 21, 1980, this highly anticipated sequel became the highest-grossing film of the year, grossing an estimated $401.5 million worldwide. Unlike its predecessor, Empire received mixed reception from critics, and fans were troubled by its darker, more mature themes than those of the light-hearted Star Wars adventure. Critics praised the expressive features and characterization of the puppet character Yoda, a diminutive alien who serves as Luke's teacher. The film was nominated for several awards and won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards and a BAFTA, among others. Subsequent releases brought the film's worldwide receipts to $538–549 million and, when adjusted for inflation, it is the 13th highest-grossing film in the United States and Canada.

Since its release, The Empire Strikes Back has been re-evaluated by critics and is now often considered the best film in the Star Wars series and one of the greatest films ever made. It had a significant impact on cinema and popular culture and is often considered an example of a superior sequel to its predecessor. The denouement, in which Vader reveals that he is Luke's father, is often considered one of cinema's greatest twists and turns. The film has spawned a variety of spin-off products and adaptations, including video games and a radio play. The United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2010. Return of the Jedi (1983) followed Empire, concluding the original Star Wars trilogy. Trilogies of prequels and sequels that complete the "Skywalker saga" have since been released.
