The Birds is a 1963 American thriller horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It is based on a 1952 short novel of the same name, inspired by horror stories, written by Daphne du Maurier.3 The film features starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Veronica Cartwright.
In 2016, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) is the spoiled daughter of a San Francisco media mogul. One Friday, she goes looking for a bird in a pet store on behalf of her aunt. The clerk, Mrs. MacGruder (Ruth McDevitt'), goes away for a moment, leaving Melanie alone.
While Melanie waits, Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), a successful lawyer with whom she falls in love at first sight, enters the store. Mitch is looking for a pair of Agapornis parrots that he plans to give to his sister for her birthday, and turns to Melanie, mistaking her for the seller. Melanie plays along, until Mitch tells her that he recognized her, because Melanie had been accused in a trial some time ago, and had decided to play a prank on her. The saleswoman returns and, when Mitch asks for information about the parrots, she tells him that she can't give it to him right away, but that he will have to wait until the next day. Mitch leaves, and before he leaves, Melanie writes down his car's license plates, then calls her father's newspaper and asks one of the employees to find Mitch's full name and address.
The next day, Melanie goes to Mitch's apartment with a couple of parrots in a cage to give him a pleasant surprise. A neighbor tells him that Mitch is not going to spend the weekend there, but at Bodega Bay. Determined to see Mitch, Melanie leaves for Bodega Bay in her luxury convertible, wearing an expensive fur coat and carrying the cage with the parrots.
Arriving on the coast, she goes to the post office to find out the address of the Brenner family. The clerk (John McGovern) tells him that the house is across the bay and the only way to get there is to follow the road along the coast. But Melanie says she'd rather surprise the family and the clerk suggests she rent a boat with an outboard motor to get there. Melanie asks the name of Mitch's sister, and the clerk tells her her name is Alice or Lois, but to be sure, she recommends asking at the home of the town schoolteacher, Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette ).
Mélanie arrives at the teacher's house, where there seems to be no one there. In a window, there is a small sign advertising a room for rent. Mélanie is preparing to leave when Annie, a young woman her age, appears. They introduce themselves and Melanie asks the Brenner girl's name, which turns out to be Cathy (Veronica Cartwright). Annie offers Mélanie a cigarette and, curious, asks her if she knows Mitch. Melanie realizes that there was a romantic relationship between Mitch and Annie, and says that she is bringing a birthday present for Cathy.
Back at Bodega Bay, Melanie parks her car and walks to the dock to board the motorboat she rented. A fisherman (Doodles Weaver) helps her off the dock onto the boat and, struck by Melanie's elegance and the cage in her gloved hand, asks her if she knows how to drive a boat. She says yes, and leaves without any problem.
As she approaches the Brenner family home, Melanie turns off the engine when she sees Mitch, heading toward a nearby garage. She then begins to row back to the dock, with the idea of surreptitiously leaving the cage inside the house and returning to Bodega Bay without being seen. She succeeds and returns to the boat, walks away and crouches, waiting to see the effect of her prank. Mitch returns to the house and, after a few minutes, rushes outside to look for the mysterious visitor. Melanie laughs at her own joke and leaves by boat. Mitch sees her from afar, goes to look for cufflinks and, while looking at them, sees Mélanie, then takes the car and goes to meet her at Bodega Bay.
Back on the dock, Melanie waits for Mitch to arrive, when a seagull suddenly attacks her and injures her forehead, leaving her bloody and shocked. Mitch rushes to his aid and takes him to a nearby restaurant, where the owners, Deke Carter (Lonny Chapman) and his wife Helen (Elizabeth Wilson), give him cotton and disinfectant for the wound.
Melanie is invited to Brenner's sister's birthday party, but must face the suspicions of Lydia, Brenner's mother, who sees Melanie as a usurper of her son's business.
During the birthday party, which takes place outdoors, Melanie gets closer to Brenner, but a group of seagulls burst in and attack the children.
From then on, the birds' behavior becomes more and more bizarre, until Bodega Bay is plunged into chaos, with explosions and bird attacks in the area. Melanie, Mitch, Cathy and Mitch's mother are locked in the Brenner family house where they are attacked again. It is a long time before Melanie hears several noises coming from the attic, when she goes in and shines a lantern, she sees the broken ceiling and several crows on an old bed, the birds attack her but Mitch pulls her away out of the attic and they block the door.
Melanie is in shock and Mitch decides to drive her to Bodega Bay Hospital in his car. Mitch leaves the house and manages to get to the garage despite being pecked in the legs, but without serious consequences, pulling Melanie's car into the driveway. Then they all get in the car and Cathy asks Mitch if she can take the lovebirds that Melanie gave her. Finally, the film ends with the car moving slowly over what looks like ground covered in birds.
