Description of this Battle of the Rail Poster

“The Battle of the Rail” is a French war film directed by René Clément, released in 1946. It tells the true story of the resistance of French railway workers during the Second World War.

The film begins with the German occupation of France in 1940. Railways are vital to the Germans, who use them to transport troops and equipment. French railway workers are then faced with a choice: continue to work normally for the occupier or join the resistance.

The hero of the film, Bernard, a young railway worker, is convinced that resistance is the only possible path. He convinced his colleagues to join the railway resistance and they began sabotaging German trains in secret, using simple but effective means, such as flints to remove bolts from the rails or levers to move switches.

The saboteurs are in constant danger, as the Germans do everything possible to stop them. They are aided by brave civilians who risk their lives to help them avoid capture.

Despite the losses and arrests, the saboteurs continue their resistance work, and the tension rises until a spectacular final scene where a German train carrying troops is derailed thanks to the efforts of the resistance. The film ends on a hopeful note, with the French railway workers returning to their work autonomously and the Germans helpless in the face of their resistance.

“The Battle of the Rail” is a moving and captivating film that testifies to the courage and determination of the French resistance fighters during the war. It shows how seemingly insignificant acts of sabotage can become acts of bravery that change the course of history. A must-see film for anyone interested in the history of the Second World War and the resistance.
