Description of this Superman 1978 Poster

Superman is a 1978 superhero film based on the DC Comics character. It is an international co-production between the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Panama and the United States, supervised by Alexander and Ilya Salkind, produced by their partner Pierre Spengler and written by Mario Puzo based on a story de Puzo, and the first episode of the Superman film series. Directed by Richard Donner, the film stars an ensemble of actors including Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origins of Superman (Reeve), including his childhood as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El (Brando), and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as a reporter, Clark Kent, he adopts a gentle demeanor in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane (Kidder) while battling the villainous Lex Luthor (Hackman).

Ilya came up with the idea for a Superman film in 1973 and, after a difficult process with DC Comics, the Salkinds and Spengler purchased the rights to the character the following year. Several directors, notably Guy Hamilton, and screenwriters (Mario Puzo, David and Leslie Newman, and Robert Benton), were associated with the project before Richard Donner was hired to direct it. Tom Mankiewicz was brought in to rewrite the script and given the title of "creative consultant". It was decided to film Superman and its sequel Superman II (1980) simultaneously, with principal photography beginning in March 1977 and ending in October 1978. Tensions arose between Donner and the producers, and it was decided to stop filming the sequel, 75% of which had already been completed, and finish the first film.

The most expensive film made up to that point, with a budget of $55 million, Superman was released in December 1978 to critical and financial success; its worldwide receipts of $300 million made it the second highest-grossing film of the year. The film was praised for Reeve's performance and John Williams' musical score, and was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Editing, Best Score (Original Score), and Best Sound, and received a Special Achievement Academy Award for visual effects. In 2017, Superman was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress.

On the planet Krypton, Jor-El, a member of the Kryptonian High Council, discovers that the planet will soon be destroyed by the explosion of its red supergiant sun. The other council members reject his claims. To save Kal-El, his infant son, Jor-El sends him on a spaceship to Earth, where his dense molecular structure will give him superhuman strength and other powers. Krypton is then destroyed.

The ship lands near Smallville, Kansas. Kal-El, around three years old, is found by Jonathan and Martha Kent, who are stunned to see him lifting their truck. They decide to raise him as their own child and name him Clark, after Martha's maiden name. Jonathan tells the boy that he must have been sent to Earth for "a reason".

After Jonathan dies of a heart attack, 18-year-old Clark hears a psychic "call" and discovers a glowing green crystal in the remains of his spaceship. This prompts him to travel to the Arctic where he uses the crystal to build the Fortress of Solitude, which resembles the architecture of Krypton. Inside, a hologram of Jor-El explains Clark's true origins and, after twelve years of education about why he was sent to Earth and his powers, he leaves the Fortress wearing a blue and red suit with a red cape and the family crest of the House of El on his chest. Having become a journalist at the Daily Planet in Metropolis, Clark meets Lois Lane, his work colleague, with whom he develops a romantic attraction.

Lois is the victim of a helicopter accident. Clark uses his powers publicly for the first time to save her, surprising the crowd gathered below. He then foils a jewel thief who attempts to scale the Solow Building, captures thieves who flee the police and drop off their cruise cabin on Wall Street, rescues a young girl's cat from a tree, and saves Air Force One after an engine was destroyed by lightning. The “caped prodigy” instantly becomes a celebrity. Perry White, the boss of the Daily Planet, wants the newspaper to find out more information about him. The next evening, Clark visits Lois at her penthouse for an interview and takes her on a plane; Lois then writes an article in which she calls him "Superman".

Meanwhile, criminal mastermind Lex Luthor learns that a nuclear missile test was carried out jointly by the US Army and US Navy. He purchases hundreds of acres of desert land and reprograms both missiles to detonate in the San Andreas Fault, with his assistant Otis accidentally programming the coordinates of the second missile incorrectly. Knowing that Superman might stop his plan, Lex deduces that a recently discovered meteorite came from Krypton and is radioactive to Superman. After recovering a piece of this meteorite with his accomplices Otis and Eve Teschmacher, Luthor lures Superman to his underground lair and reveals his plan which consists of sinking everything west of the fault into the Pacific Ocean. of San Andreas, leaving Luthor's desert land to become the new West Coast of the United States. Luthor then exposes him to kryptonite, a mineral contained in the meteorite, which significantly weakens Superman, while Luthor taunts him about the second missile that will detonate in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Teschmacher is horrified that Luthor doesn't care that his mother lives in Hackensack. Luthor lets Superman die. Knowing he always keeps his word, Teschmacher helps Superman on the condition that he first stops the eastbound missile. Freed, Superman diverts the missile eastward into space, preventing it from reaching the westward missile before it explodes in the San Andreas Fault. Strong earthquakes occur in California, damaging the Golden Gate Bridge and breaching the Hoover Dam. Superman mitigates the effects of the explosion by sealing the rift.

While Superman is busy saving other people, Lois' car falls into a crevasse caused by one of the aftershocks, trapping her as it fills with dirt and debris. She suffocates before Superman can reach her. Furious at failing to save her, Superman defies Jor-El's warning not to manipulate human history and instead follows Jonathan's advice that he must be there for "a reason". He speeds around the Earth, reversing time to a point before Lois's death, and also undoing the damage caused by the missile and earthquake. After saving the West Coast, Superman delivers Luthor and Otis to the prison before flying off into the sunrise.
