Description of this Ghostbusters Poster
Ghostbusters is a 1984 American comedy film, directed and produced by Ivan Reitman, and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Bill Murray, Aykroyd and Ramis play Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler, three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost hunting business in New York. It also stars Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, as well as Annie Potts, William Atherton and Ernie Hudson in supporting roles.
Drawing on his own fascination with spirituality, Aykroyd conceived Ghostbusters as a project starring John Belushi and himself, in which they would venture through time and space to combat supernatural threats. After Belushi's death in 1982, with Aykroyd's concept deemed financially unfeasible, Ramis was hired to help rewrite the script to set it in New York and make it more realistic. It was the first comedy film to use expensive special effects, and Columbia Pictures, concerned about its relatively high budget of $25–30 million, had little confidence in its box office potential. Filming took place from October 1983 to January 1984, in New York and Los Angeles. Due to competition for special effects studios between the various films in development at the time, Richard Edlund used part of the budget to found Boss Film Studios, which used a combination of practical effects, miniatures and puppets to produce the macabre visuals.
Ghostbusters was released on June 8, 1984, to critical acclaim and became a cultural phenomenon. The film was well received for its blend of comedy, action and horror, and Murray's performance was often praised. It grossed $282.2 million during its initial theatrical release, making it the second highest-grossing film of 1984 in the United States and Canada, and the highest-grossing comedy of all time. It was the number one film in theaters for seven consecutive weeks and one of four films to gross over $100 million that year. Further theatrical releases brought the total receipts to an estimated $295.2 million, making it one of the most popular comedies of the 1980s. In 2015, the Library of Congress selected it to be preserved in the National Film Registry. Its theme song, "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr, was also a number one hit.
Thanks to its effect on popular culture and its devoted fans, the success of Ghostbusters launched a multi-billion dollar multimedia franchise. This franchise includes the popular animated television series The Real Ghostbusters (1986), its sequel Extreme Ghostbusters (1997), video games, board games, comic books, clothing, music, and haunted attractions. Ghostbusters was followed in 1989 by Ghostbusters II, which performed less well financially and critically, and attempts to develop a second sequel stalled in 2014 after Ramis' death. After a 2016 reboot received mixed reviews and underperformed financially, a second sequel to the 1984 film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, was released on November 19, 2021.
After Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler, professors of parapsychology at Columbia University, have their first encounter with a ghost at the New York Public Library, the university's dean rejects the credibility of their research on the paranormal and fires them. The trio reacted by creating "Ghostbusters", a paranormal investigation and elimination service set up in an abandoned fire station. They develop high-tech, nuclear-powered equipment to capture and contain ghosts, but business doesn't do very well at first.
After a paranormal encounter in her apartment, cellist Dana Barrett calls the Ghostbusters. She describes seeing a demonic dog-like creature in her refrigerator saying a single word: "Zuul." Ray and Egon research Zuul and Dana's apartment building, while Peter inspects her apartment and unsuccessfully attempts to seduce her. The Ghostbusters are hired to make a gluttonous ghost, Slimer, disappear from the Sedgewick Hotel. Having failed to properly test their equipment, Egon warns the group that the crossing of energy flows from their proton weapons could cause a catastrophic explosion. They capture the ghost and deposit it in an ecto-containment unit under the fire station. Supernatural activity rapidly increases in the city and the Ghostbusters become famous; they hired a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore, to keep up with the growing demand.
Suspecting the Ghostbusters, Environmental Protection Agency inspector Walter Peck asks to evaluate their equipment, but Peter rebuffs him. Egon warns that the containment unit is almost full and supernatural energy is spreading throughout the city. Peter meets Dana and informs her that Zuul was a demigod worshiped as a servant of "Gozer the Gozerian", a shape-shifting god of destruction. Upon returning home, she is possessed by Zuul; a similar entity owns its neighbor, Louis Tully. Peter arrives to find the possessed Dana/Zuul claiming to be "the Gatekeeper". Louis is brought to Egon by police officers and claims to be "Vinz Clortho, the Master of the Keys". The Ghostbusters agree to separate them.
Peck returns with law enforcement and city workers to have the SOS arrested and deactivate their containment unit, causing an explosion that frees the captured ghosts. Louis/Vinz escapes in the confusion and goes to the building to join Dana/Zuul. In prison, Ray and Egon reveal that Ivo Shandor, leader of a sect worshiping Gozer in the early 20th century, designed Dana's building to serve as an antenna to attract and focus energy spirit to summon Gozer and cause the apocalypse. Faced with the supernatural chaos reigning in the city, the Ghostbusters convince the mayor to free them.
The SOS go to the roof of the building, while Dana/Zuul and Louis/Vinz open the portal between dimensions and transform into demonic dogs. Gozer appears in the form of a woman and attacks the SOS then disappears when they try to fight back. His disembodied voice asks the Ghostbusters to "choose the form of the destroyer". Ray inadvertently remembers a beloved company mascot from his childhood, and Gozer reappears in the form of a gigantic marshmallow Stay Puft man who begins destroying the town. Against his earlier advice, Egon asks the team to cross their proton energy flows on the dimension gate. The resulting explosion destroys Gozer's avatar, sending him back to his dimension, and closes the portal. The Ghostbusters save Dana and Louis from the rubble and are greeted as heroes in the street.
