Description of this Prince of Darkness Poster
Prince of Darkness is a 1987 American supernatural horror film, written and directed by John Carpenter, starring Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, Jameson Parker and Lisa Blount. The second installment of what Carpenter calls his "Apocalypse Trilogy" - which began with The Thing (1982) and ends with Den of Madness (1994) - the film follows a group of quantum physics students in Los Angeles who are asked to help a Catholic priest investigate an ancient cylinder of liquid discovered in a monastery, which they discover is a liquid incarnation of Satan, endowed with sentience.
A Catholic priest invites quantum physicist Professor Howard Birack and his students to join him in the basement of a Los Angeles monastery belonging to the "Brotherhood of Sleep," an ancient order that communicates through dreams. The priest needs their help to investigate a mysterious cylinder containing swirling green liquid. Among the thirteen academics present, we find the wise Walter Fong, the discreet Kelly, the very tense Susan Cabot, as well as the lovers Brian Marsh and Catherine Danforth.
They decipher an ancient text found next to the cylinder, which describes the liquid as the bodily incarnation of Satan. The team also learns that Jesus Christ was an alien who was executed for heresy after trying to warn the people of Earth about the ship in which Satan was trapped. We then discover that the liquid is sensitive. The academics use a computer to analyze the books around it and discover that they contain differential equations. For two days, small jets of liquid escape from the cylinder. Group members exposed to the liquid are possessed by the entity and attack others. The first victim is Susan, who begins killing the others one by one, after which they too become possessed. Anyone who attempts to flee the monastery is killed by the growing mass of fascinated homeless people who have surrounded the building.
Professor Birack and the priest theorize that Satan is actually the offspring of the "Anti-God", an even more powerful evil force linked to the realm of antimatter. The survivors find themselves sharing a recurring dream (a tachyon transmission sent as a warning from the future, "year one-nine-nine-nine") showing a shadowy figure emerging from the front of the church. The hazy transmission changes slightly with each occurrence of the dream, gradually revealing more details. The narration of the transmission each time indicates to the dreamer that he is witnessing a real broadcast from the future.
Walter, locked in a closet, sees the possessed man bringing the cylinder to a sleeping Kelly. The cylinder opens and the remaining liquid transfuses into Kelly's body, transforming her into Satan's physical vessel: a horribly disfigured being with powers of telekinesis and regeneration. Kelly attempts to summon the Anti-God through a dimensional portal using a mirror, but the mirror is too small and the effort fails.
While the rest of the team is busy fighting the possessed, Kelly finds a large wall mirror and passes the hand of the Anti-God through it. Catherine, the only one who can act, attacks Kelly, causing them both to fall through the portal. The priest then smashes the mirror with an axe, trapping Kelly, the Anti-God and Catherine in the other world. Catherine briefly appears on the other side of the mirror, reaching towards the portal before it closes. Immediately, the possessed die, the street people move away and the survivors (Brian, Walter, Professor Birack and the priest) are saved.
Brian has a recurring dream again and sees that Catherine (apparently possessed) is the figure coming out of the church. Brian wakes up to find Kelly, apparently Satan's vessel, lying in bed. It turns out to be another dream and he wakes up screaming. He stands up and approaches his bedroom mirror, hand outstretched, the screen fading to black just before he touches the mirror.
