Description of this Poster Zombie Poster
Day of the Living Dead is a 1985 post-apocalyptic horror film written and directed by George A. Romero, and produced by Richard P. Rubinstein. The third film in Romero's Night of the Living Dead series, it stars Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, Joseph Pilato, Jarlath Conroy and Richard Liberty as members of a group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse who take refuge in an underground bunker in Florida, where they must determine the outcome of the conflict between humanity and the horde of undead. Romero described the film as a "tragedy about how a lack of human communication causes chaos and collapse, even in this small slice of society's pie."
Work on Day of the Living Dead began shortly after the release of the previous film in the series, Dawn of the Dead (1978), but was halted when Romero began work on other projects. It was developed as part of a three-film deal with that film's distributor, United Film Distribution Company (UFDC); Romero chose to first produce the other two projects under the contract, Knightriders (1981) and Creepshow (1982). Although the filmmaker was granted final cut privileges, the script was rewritten several times, as the UFDC feared that Romero's ambitious original vision - which he described as "the Gone With the Wind of zombie films " - must be filmed with the intention of being rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America to ensure commercial viability. Day of the Living Dead was filmed in the fall of 1984, with above-ground scenes in the towns of Fort Myers and Sanibel and underground scenes near Wampum, Pennsylvania. Tom Savini returned to do the film's special makeup effects; he was assisted by a team of artists including Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, who later became known for their work on the television series The Walking Dead.
Day of the Living Dead premiered in Hicksville, New York on June 30, 1985, and grossed $34 million worldwide on a budget of approximately $4 million. Although the makeup effects were praised, the film did not enjoy the critical and commercial success of its predecessors; the series did not see another installment until the release of Land of the Dead in 2005. The film's reception improved over time, and Romero has stated that it was his favorite film of the original trilogy of the dead. Like its predecessors, Day of the Living Dead has become a cult film and has inspired numerous parodies and homages.
The film has been the subject of two remakes: the first is the 2008 film of the same name, and the second is Day of the Living Dead: Bloodline (2018). A television series based on the film began airing on Syfy in 2021, while a standalone sequel, Night of the Living Dead II, is in active development.
A zombie apocalypse has ravaged the entire world. A handful of surviving humans live in a secure underground bunker housing scientists and soldiers in the Everglades. Scientists are trying to find a solution to the zombie pandemic; the soldiers were tasked with protecting them. Dr. Sarah Bowman, her lover and soldier Miguel Salazar, radio operator Bill McDermott and helicopter pilot John leave their underground base for Fort Myers to find other survivors. They find only a large horde of undead and return to the base, where they are told that the officer in charge of the military detachment, Major Cooper, is dead. Sarah worries about Miguel's deteriorating mental state.
Dr. Logan, the lead scientist (nicknamed "Frankenstein" by the soldiers because of his gruesome surgical dissections of zombies), believes that plague victims can be made docile and domesticated through training and conditioning. He keeps a collection of captive undead for use as guinea pigs in a large underground corral in the complex. Sarah vehemently opposes Logan's research into conditioning; rather, she wants to look for a possible cure for the virus. Sarah discovers that Logan has been experimenting on the corpses of dead soldiers, including Major Cooper. Fearing that the other soldiers will turn against them, Sarah reluctantly keeps the secret.
The short-tempered and unstable Captain Rhodes and his soldiers vehemently oppose the dangers of capturing zombies and keeping them in the compound. Tension between soldiers and scientists grows in the face of depleting supplies, loss of communication with other survivors, and slow and uncertain progress in research. During a meeting, Rhodes declares that he is taking command of the base. He only gives scientists a "certain" amount of time to prove the results and says he will execute anyone who interferes with his authority. He also threatens to abandon the scientists and leave the complex, depriving them of their protection from the undead hordes.
Disturbed by Rhodes' threats, Sarah discusses the situation with John and Bill. John professes his belief that the zombie plague is a form of divine punishment against humanity, and suggests that the three of them take the helicopter, abandon the soldiers, and fly to a desert island somewhere where they can make a living. land and start a new life. Logan hopes to secure Rhodes' goodwill by showing him the results of his research. He is particularly proud of "Bub", a docile zombie who remembers parts of his past life and adopts rudimentary human behavior. Rhodes, however, is unimpressed and increasingly loses patience with the scientists.
During a zombie raid mission, a zombie escapes from his harness when Miguel loses concentration, leading to the deaths of Privates Miller and Johnson. Miguel snaps and tries to kill the creature, but another zombie bites him on the arm. With the help of John and Bill, Sarah amputates and cauterizes Miguel's arm to stop the infection. Rhodes calls off the experiments and demands that all captive zombies be destroyed, and refuses any further help from him and his remaining men.
Sarah and Bill then go to get medicine for Miguel, and discover that Logan has been experimenting on the remains of Miller and Johnson. Fearing that Logan has gone crazy, Bill decides that they must leave immediately by helicopter. Rhodes discovers that Logan fed Bub the flesh of his dead soldiers to reinforce his behavior. Furious, Rhodes kills Logan and seizes the remaining scientists and non-military personnel, stripping them of their weapons. Rhodes attempts to force John to take him and his remaining soldiers away from the base, which John refuses to do. In response, Rhodes kills Logan's assistant Fisher, locks Sarah and Bill in the zombie corral, and orders Private Steel to beat John into submission.
Back in the laboratory, Bub manages to escape his chains and discovers Logan's corpse. In a display of human emotion, he mourns the loss of his instructor, then picks up a gun and sets out on a quest for revenge. Meanwhile, a suicidal Miguel heads to the surface. As the soldiers try to pursue him, John knocks Rhodes unconscious, steals his weapons and goes to the zombie corral to save Sarah and Bill. Miguel opens the perimeter fence, letting in a horde of zombies, and lets them tear into him before pressing the elevator remote, allowing the zombies to enter the complex. As the undead invade the bunker, Rhodes leaves his men behind to be killed. Pursued by Bub, he attempts to escape, but runs into a mass of zombies and is shot in the stomach by Bub, who mockingly greets Rhodes as the zombies tear him apart. John, Sarah and Bill manage to reach the helicopter and escape to a tropical island.
