Description of this Cliffhanger Movie Poster

Cliffhanger is a 1993 American action film directed and co-produced by Renny Harlin, co-written and starring Sylvester Stallone alongside John Lithgow, Michael Rooker and Janine Turner. Based on a concept by mountain climber John Long, the film follows Gabe (Stallone), a mountain climber who finds himself involved in the theft of a U.S. Treasury plane crossing the Rocky Mountains. The film premiered at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and was released in the United States on May 28, 1993 by TriStar Pictures. It grossed $255 million worldwide.

Rangers Gabriel "Gabe" Walker and his girlfriend Jessie Deighan are sent to rescue their friend Hal Tucker and his girlfriend, Sarah, after Hal injures his knee and strands them on a peak in the Colorado Rockies. As they try to rescue Sarah, part of her harness breaks. Although Gabe manages to catch her, his gloved hand slips and she falls to her death. Hal accuses Gabe of being responsible for Sarah's death and Gabe, overcome with guilt, takes an extended leave of absence.

Eight months later, Gabe returns to the ranger station to gather his last possessions and persuade Jessie to leave with him. They then receive a distress call from a group of stranded climbers. Hal goes looking for the climbers and Jessie manages to persuade Gabe to help them. Hal remains bitter towards Gabe over Sarah's death, even threatening to push him off a ledge. When they track down the climbers, they discover that the distress call was a fake and are taken prisoner by a ruthless gang of international thieves led by the psychopathic Eric Qualen, a former military intelligence agent. The surviving thieves are the brutal Kynette, the sadistic Delmar and the pilot Kristel. Qualen, along with U.S. Treasury agent Richard Travers, managed to steal three suitcases filled with uncirculated bills worth more than $100 million from a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 during an in-flight transfer to a Lockheed Jetstar. Their escape plan backfired when a supposedly dead FBI agent shot and damaged the hydraulic system, sending their plane crashing into the mountain. They now need Gabe and Hal's help to locate the suitcases using locator beacons.

At gunpoint, Hal and Gabe lead them to the first briefcase, located at the top of a steep rock face. Gabe is tied up and forced to climb up the wall to reach the briefcase, but when Qualen plans to have Gabe killed once he has the briefcase, Hal warns him not to come back down. Before Delmar pulls him back and takes aim at him, Qualen orders Kynette and one of the thieves to try to pull him down, prompting Gabe to cut the rope. Qualen orders one of the thieves to open fire on Gabe, causing an avalanche that kills Holden, one of their members. When they see the money from the first deal disappear, Qualen thinks Gabe is dead and orders Hal to guide them forward. Gabe goes looking for Jessie in an abandoned cabin and collects mountaineering equipment to reach the second case before Qualen. Night falls on the mountain and when Qualen arrives, Gabe and Jessie have emptied the suitcase and left only a single note on which is written "Want to make a trade? Qualen orders his men to split up, and One of them, Ryan, spots Gabe and Jessie before trying to shoot them; however, Gabe blinds him, dropping the assault rifle before attacking the man on a snowy slope. After sending Ryan into the void, the two groups take shelter: Gabe and Jessie burn the money to keep warm and fall asleep.

In the early morning, Gabe and Jessie decide to beat Qualen on the last case. Elsewhere, when Hal sees two friends, Evan and Brett, he pulls them away before Qualen orders his men to open fire. Brett is killed and Evan is injured, but he manages to escape the mountain and parachute to safety. Frank, without news of Gabe or the others, explores the mountain by helicopter, spots Evan's parachute and manages to get him to safety while contacting the authorities. After Gabe impales Kynette on a stalactite in a cave after luring her, he attempts to call Frank, their rescue helicopter pilot, for help on one of the mercenaries' radios, but Hal alert about the explosives Qualen planted above them on the mountain. Gabe and Jessie escape the falling debris in time. Meanwhile, the mercenaries flag Frank in the helicopter, but by the time he realizes it is a trap, it is too late and he is shot and killed by Delmar. While hugging Frank's body, Hal discreetly grabs Frank's knife. As the mercenaries split up to search for the final case, Hal manages to use the knife to stab Delmar, killing him with his own shotgun and fleeing. Travers sees Gabe and goes after him. While on the surface of a frozen river, Travers observes Gabe under the ice and attempts to kill him, but Gabe uses his slaughter gun to shoot Travers and his lifeless body is carried away by the current of River.

However, at the same time, Qualen takes Jessie hostage when she signals the helicopter to stop, believing Frank to be piloting it: Qualen tells Gabe and Hal over the radio that he is holding Jessie captive at aboard the helicopter, demanding Gabe and Hal to deliver the money from the third case to her at a high-up meeting point and threatening to kill her if they refuse to cooperate. Gabe and Hal accept, and they find themselves on a bridge on the side of a cliff; however, Qualen attempts to challenge Gabe by throwing the briefcase into the helicopter, but when he threatens to kill Jessie again, Gabe orders Qualen to release her a safe distance from the cliff. Qualen reluctantly agrees and uses a winch to lower Jessie to the ground. Once Jessie is safe, Gabe throws the bag of money into the helicopter's rotors, shredding the money. Furious, Qualen attempts to use the helicopter to kill Gabe, but Gabe uses the winch cable to attach the helicopter to a steel ladder on the cliff; Hal arrives and helps by shooting down the helicopter. The ladder breaks and leaves Gabe and Qualen on top of the helicopter carcass, hanging from the cable: Gabe fights against Qualen and manages to get to safety as the carcass detaches from the cable and falls to the bottom from the mountain, killing Qualen. Gabe reunites with Jessie and Hal as they are found by Treasury agents led by Walter Wright aboard a helicopter, arranging for a rescue helicopter to be sent. The trio is seen sitting on top of a mountain, reminiscent of Gabe, Hal and Sarah at the beginning.
