Description of this Modern Times Poster
Modern Times is a 1936 American silent comedy film written and directed by Charlie Chaplin, in which his iconic character, the Little Tramp, struggles to survive in the modern, industrialized world. The film is a commentary on the desperate financial and employment conditions that many people faced during the Great Depression – conditions created, according to Chaplin, by the efficiency of modern industrialization. The film stars Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, Tiny Sandford and Chester Conklin. It is notable because it is the last time that Chaplin played the character of the tramp and because it is the first time that Chaplin's voice is heard in cinema.
In 1989, Les Temps Modernes was one of the first 25 films selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for their "cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance." In 2003, it was screened "out of competition" at the Cannes Film Festival.
