Description of this Magnum Force Poster

Magnum Force is a 1973 American neo-noir action thriller film, the second to star Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan, after the 1971 film Dirty Harry. Ted Post, who had previously worked with Eastwood on Rawhide and Hang 'Em High, directed the film. The screenplay was written by John Milius and Michael Cimino (who later worked with Eastwood on Thunderbolt and Lightfoot). The music for the film was composed by Lalo Schifrin. This film features the first appearances of David Soul, Tim Matheson and Robert Urich. At 122 minutes, it is the longest of the five Inspector Harry films.

After being acquitted of mass murder on a legal technicality, mobster Carmine Ricca leaves the court in his limousine. While driving on a city road, the driver is stopped by a San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) motorcycle cop, who calmly shoots all the men in the car. Detective Harry Callahan goes to the crime scene with his new partner, Earlington "Early" Smith, when they are supposed to be on a surveillance mission. Their superior, Lieutenant Neil Briggs, seems to want to keep him away from the murder investigation.

During a visit to the airport, Callahan helps subdue two men who attempt to hijack a plane. He then meets blues Phil Sweet, John Davis, Alan "Red" Astrachan and Mike Grimes during a visit to the police shooting range. Sweet is a former US Army Ranger and Vietnam veteran who has great shooting skills. His friends aren't that different. Another motorcycle cop shoots up a pool party, leaving no usable evidence of his crime.

While Callahan and Early take on criminals in a supermarket, a pimp murders a prostitute who refused him money. The next day, the pimp is killed by a police officer. While investigating the scene, Callahan realizes that the culprit is a cop. He thinks it is his old friend Charlie McCoy, who became depressed and suicidal after leaving his wife, Carol. Later, a police officer on a motorcycle assassinates drug lord Lou Guzman. The killer, who turns out to be Davis, encounters McCoy in the parking lot and shoots him dead.

At an annual shooting competition, Callahan learns that Davis was the first police officer to arrive on the scene after the murders of Guzman and McCoy. Callahan retrieves a bullet from Davis' Colt and matches it to the bullets from Guzman's murder. Callahan begins to suspect that a secret death squad within the SFPD is responsible for these murders. Briggs insists that Ricca's former associate, Frank Palancio, is the real culprit. Callahan persuades Briggs to send Davis and Sweet as reinforcements to raid Palancio's offices. However, Palancio and his gang are alerted by a phone call, Sweet is killed by a gunshot, and all of Palancio's men die in the ensuing shootout with the police. Palancio attempts to escape, but Callahan jumps on the hood of his car, causing him to lose control and crash into a crane, killing him. Briggs angrily suspends Callahan for Sweet's death. Returning home, Callahan finds Davis, Astrachan and Grimes waiting for him and gives him an ultimatum: he must side with them, which Callahan refuses. While checking his mailbox, Callahan discovers a bomb left by the vigilantes and manages to defuse it. A second bomb, however, killed Early before Callahan could warn him.

Callahan then learns that Briggs is the secret leader of the death squad. Briggs defends his actions, saying he is only doing what the broken legal system cannot do. At gunpoint, Briggs orders Callahan to drive to an undisclosed location, while being followed by Grimes. Callahan manages to disarm Briggs and force him out of the car before running over Grimes. Davis and Astrachan appear and Callahan flees on an old aircraft carrier to a shipbreaking yard. Callahan kills Astrachan and takes his motorcycle, leading Davis in a series of jumps between ships. At the end of the chase, Davis jumped ship into San Francisco Bay and died instantly. Callahan is then confronted by Briggs, who threatens him with his gun. The lieutenant mocks Callahan and threatens to sue him. As Callahan walks away from the car, he surreptitiously activates the timer on his mailbox bomb and throws it into the back seat, killing Briggs moments later. Callahan then proclaims: "A man must know his limits."
