Description of this Nightmare Before Christmas Poster

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 American animated film, directed in stop-motion by Henry Selick (in his directorial debut) and produced and designed by Tim Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, the king of "Halloween Town", who stumbles upon "Christmas Town" and seeks to take control of the holiday. Danny Elfman wrote the songs and music and provided the vocals for Jack. The main cast also includes Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page, Paul Reubens, Glenn Shadix and Ed Ivory.

The Nightmare Before Christmas originated in a poem written by Burton in 1982 while working as an animator at Walt Disney Productions. With the success of Vincent that same year, Burton began considering developing The Nightmare Before Christmas as a short film or half-hour television special, without success. Over the years, Burton revisited the project regularly, and in 1990 he entered into a development deal with Walt Disney Studios. Production began in July 1991 in San Francisco; Disney initially distributed the film through Touchstone Pictures because the studio believed the film would be "too dark and scary for children."

The film was met with critical success upon release, receiving praise for its animation (particularly the innovation of the stop-motion art form), characters, songs, and score. Although it enjoyed only modest box office success at first, it has since gained a cult following. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, a first for an animated film, but lost to Jurassic Park. The film has since been re-released by Walt Disney Pictures and was re-released annually in Disney Digital 3-D from 2006 to 2010.

Halloween Town is a fantasy world populated by various monsters and beings associated with the holiday. Jack Skellington, respected by the citizens as the "Pumpkin King", guides them in organizing the annual Halloween celebrations. However, this year Jack has grown tired of the same annual routine and wants something new. Walking through the woods the next morning, he encounters seven trees containing doorways leading to other holiday-themed worlds (Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Valentine's Day, and St. -Patrick) and comes across the one that leads to Christmas Town. Amazed by this unknown holiday, Jack returns home to show his friends and neighbors what he has discovered, but, knowing nothing about the idea of Christmas, they compare everything to their idea of Halloween. However, they identify with a character in Christmas Town: its ruler, Santa Claus, or "Sandy Claws" as Jack mistakenly calls him. Jack locks himself in his house to study Christmas more closely and find a way to rationally explain it. After studies and experiments yield nothing, Jack ultimately decides that Christmas needs to be improved rather than understood and announces that Halloween Town will take over Christmas this year.

Jack assigns the townspeople numerous Christmas-themed tasks, including singing carols, making presents, and building a sleigh pulled by skeletal reindeer. Sally, a female creation of local mad scientist Dr. Finkelstein, has a vision that tells her their efforts will end disastrously. Jack, whom she secretly loves, ignores this and entrusts her with the task of making him a Santa Claus costume. He also tasks the mischievous trio Lock, Shock and Barrel with kidnapping Santa Claus and bringing him to Halloween Town. Jack tells Santa that he will take care of Christmas for him this year and orders the trio to keep Santa safe, but against his wishes, they deliver Santa to Jack's longtime rival, Oogie Boogie , a bogeyman with a passion for gambling, who plots to play a game with Santa's life on the line. Sally attempts to rescue Santa to save him and Jack from their potential fate, but she is also captured .

Jack leaves to deliver his gifts in the real world, but they frighten the population, who contact the authorities and ask them to close their houses and residences to protect themselves. When news of Jack's alleged misdeeds spreads, he is eventually shot down by military forces and crashes in a cemetery. While everyone in Halloween Town believes him to be dead, Jack survives. As he laments the disaster he has caused, he realizes that he still enjoyed the experience, thus rekindling his love for Halloween, but he soon realizes that he must act quickly to right his mistake . Jack returns home and infiltrates Oogie's lair, saving Santa and Sally before confronting Oogie and defeating him by undoing the thread that holds his fabric form, causing all the critters he it contains spread and reduce it to nothing. Jack apologizes for his actions to Santa, who, although furious with Jack for the trouble he caused and for not heeding Sally's warnings, assures him that he can still save Christmas. As Santa replaces Jack's presents with authentic ones, the entire Halloween town celebrates Jack's survival and return. Santa then shows Jack that there are no hard feelings between them by bringing a snowfall to the town, which somehow fulfills Jack's original dream and allows the townspeople to finally realize the true meaning of Christmas. Afterwards, Jack and Sally declare their love for each other.
