Description of this Léon Poster
Léon is a 1994 English-language French action thriller film written and directed by Luc Besson. It stars Jean Reno and Gary Oldman, and Natalie Portman makes her film debut. The plot centers on Leon (Reno), a professional hitman who reluctantly takes in twelve-year-old Mathilda Lando (Portman) after her family is murdered by Norman Stansfield (Oldman), a corrupt agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Léon and Mathilda form an unusual relationship, as she becomes his protégé and learns the profession of a hitman. The film was distributed by Gaumont Buena Vista International on September 14, 1994 and received positive reviews.
Leon is an Italian hitman (or "cleaner", as he calls himself) in the Little Italy neighborhood of New York, working for a mafioso named "Old Tony". One day, Léon meets Mathilda Lando, a lonely twelve-year-old girl who lives with her dysfunctional family in an apartment down the hall from Léon and who has stopped going to class at her school for troubled girls. Mathilda's abusive father draws the ire of corrupt DEA agents, who paid him to hide cocaine in his apartment. After discovering that he was stealing the cocaine, DEA agents storm the building, led by their leader, smartly dressed drug addict Norman Stansfield. During the raid, Stansfield murders Mathilda's family while she is out shopping. On her return, Mathilda realizes what has happened just in time to continue her journey to Léon's apartment, who is reluctant to accommodate her.
Mathilda quickly discovers that Léon is a hitman. She begs him to take care of her and teach her his skills, because she wants to avenge the murder of her four-year-old brother. At first, Léon is disturbed by her presence and plans to murder her in his sleep, but he ends up training Mathilda and showing her how to use various weapons. In exchange, she does his shopping, cleans his apartment and teaches him to read. Mathilda admires Léon and quickly develops a crush on him, often telling him that she loves him, but he does not reciprocate.
When Léon is away, Mathilda fills a bag with weapons from Léon's collection and sets out to kill Stansfield. She sneaks into the DEA offices posing as a delivery girl and is ambushed by Stansfield in the bathroom. One of his men arrives and informs him that Leon killed Malky, one of the corrupt DEA agents, in Chinatown that morning. Léon, after discovering his plan in a note left for him, saves Mathilda, killing two other Stansfield men in the process. Stansfield, furious, confronts Tony, who is tortured into knowing Leon's whereabouts.
Léon tells Mathilda how he became a hitman. When Léon was eighteen years old in Italy, he fell in love with a young girl from a rich family, even though Léon's family was poor. The two men planned to run away, but when the girl's father discovered them, he killed her in anger. Leon kills the father in revenge and flees to New York, where he meets Tony and trains to become a hitman.
Later, as Mathilda returns home from shopping, an NYPD team sent by Stansfield captures her and infiltrates Léon's apartment. Léon ambushes the team and saves Mathilda. Léon creates a quick escape for Mathilda by smashing a hole in an air shaft. He tells her that he loves her and that she should meet him at Tony's in an hour, moments before the ESU team blows up the apartment. In the chaos, an injured Léon sneaks out of the building, disguised as an injured ESU officer. He goes unnoticed by everyone except Stansfield, who follows him and shoots him in the back. As Leon dies, he sticks the pin of a grenade into Stansfield's arm.
Mathilda goes to Tony and tries to convince him to hire her, but Tony flatly refuses to hire a twelve year old and tells Mathilda that Leon told him to give him his money if anything happened to him. Tony gives Mathilda $100 in spending money and sends her back to school, where the principal readmits her after Mathilda reveals what happened. Mathilda goes to a field near the school to plant Léon's houseplant, as she had told the latter, to "give it roots".
