Description of this Kickboxer Poster

Kickboxer is a 1989 American martial arts film directed by David Worth and starring Jean-Claude van Damme. Former kickboxing world champion Dennis Alexio also features. The film gave rise to several sequels.

Kurt Sloane is the younger brother and cornerman of Eric Sloane, the world heavyweight kickboxing champion. After another successful title defense, Eric was encouraged by the media to travel to Thailand, where kickboxing originated, to further establish his legacy. As a result, Eric and Kurt travel to Bangkok to face Tong "The Tiger" Po, Thailand's undefeated best fighter. Eric is extremely confident, but Kurt has some apprehension after seeing Tong Po kicking a concrete pillar to prepare for battle. He begs Eric not to fight, but Eric dismisses any concern.

Tong Po dominates Eric in the first round thanks to his superior strength and knowledge of the unorthodox rules of Thai kickboxing. Between rounds, Kurt once again begs Eric to stop, but Eric refuses to give up and is beaten badly in the second round. Kurt throws the towel, but Tong Po throws it out of the ring and continues his attack. He viciously hits Eric in the back with his elbow, immobilizing him, then tears Eric's world championship belt. Kurt collects the belt, and leaves with his brother on a stretcher, but the fight officials leave them in the street. Winston Taylor, a retired US Army Special Forces soldier, agrees to help them by driving them to the hospital. Following Tong Po's brutal attack, Eric is paralyzed from the waist down and will never be able to walk again.

Kurt, furious, swears to avenge his brother. He looks for a trainer to teach him Muay Thai, but local fighters make fun of him and kick him out of the gym. Eventually, Taylor tells him about Xian Chow, a famous Muay Thai Kru living in a remote area of Thailand. Before introducing him to Xian, Taylor insists that Kurt go drinking with him. During their stay at a go-go bar, Taylor confides in Kurt, implying that he let a friend die in the Vietnam War, and therefore feels he owes it to his memory to help Kurt.

Although reluctant at first, Xian agrees to train Kurt after having him pick up supplies from his niece, Mylee. While at his store, Kurt stops thugs sent by Freddy Li - a high-ranking executive in a racketeering organization and Tong Po's manager - from stealing Mylee's money. While training, Kurt drunkenly defeats some of Freddy Li's thugs in a bar fight orchestrated by Xian, who convinces Freddy Li to arrange a preliminary match between Kurt and another young fighter. Kurt is victorious and wins a match against Tong Po. It is decided that they will fight the "old way": both fighters wrap their hands in hemp rope, which is then coated with resin and dipped in broken glass to make deadly weapons.

Freddy Li arranges to have the fight rigged and borrows a million dollars from Thai crime syndicate boss Tao Liu in order to bet on Tong Po. Several days before the match, Mylee is beaten and raped by Tong Po, while that Eric is kidnapped so Freddy Li can blackmail Kurt into losing the fight. Xian's dog Kiki is also stabbed during the ambush. As Taylor prepares to take Kiki into town for treatment, Mylee confesses to him about her rape and reveals that she didn't tell Kurt, insisting that her mind needs to be clear for the fight against Tong Po. To this end, she begs Taylor to help her find Eric, but he is reluctant to upset Freddy Li.

To save his brother's life, Kurt is ordered by Freddy Li to go the distance with Tong Po before losing the fight. He endures torture, but Xian and Taylor manage to locate Eric and save him. Before the last round, Eric arrives with Xian and Taylor. He is booed by the crowd and gives Kurt a thumbs up before starting a chant of "Nack Suk Cao" (white warrior). With Eric now out of danger, Kurt has Mylee cut the hemp rope from his hands before viciously punching Tong Po, ultimately defeating him. After punching Freddy Li in the face for good measure, Kurt celebrates his victory with his brother and friends.
