Description of this John Wayne Poster
Chisum is a 1970 American western film directed by Andrew McLaglen, starring John Wayne, and adapted for the screen by Andrew J. Fenady from his short story "Chisum and the Lincoln County War". The main cast includes Forrest Tucker, Christopher George, Ben Johnson, Glenn Corbett, Andrew Prine, Bruce Cabot, Patric Knowles, Richard Jaeckel, Lynda Day George, Pedro Armendariz Jr, John Agar, John Mitchum, Ray Teal, Christopher Mitchum and Hank Worden , with Geoffrey Deuel and Pamela McMyler credited as "presenters". The film was shot in Panavision and Technicolor.
Chisum is based on the Lincoln County War of 1878 and, although a number of details have been changed, many of the film's historical figures (such as Chisum, Tunstall, McSween, Murphy, Brady, Evans, Garrett and Billy the Kid) were in the New Mexico Territory at the time and played a role in the conflict.
In Lincoln County, New Mexico, John Chisum, a benevolent and successful cattle baron, finds his peace threatened when amoral Lawrence Murphy and his associate James Dolan forcibly buy up most of the area's land and businesses . At first, Chisum tries not to get involved, although he allows the ranchers driven out by Murphy to water their herds on his land.
Bribed by Murphy, corrupt Sheriff Brady secretly hires Neemo and his group of bandits, who kill two of Chisum's men and steal a herd of horses. Chisum and his men pursue the thieves, recover the horses and discover American money in the Mexican outlaw's pocket. They are aided by Billy "The Kid" Bonney, a notorious killer who has just been hired and given a chance to reform by John Henry Tunstall, Chisum's philanthropic British neighbor.
Sallie, Chisum's niece, arrives in Lincoln to live with her uncle, and Billy begins to court her. Alexander McSween, invited by Murphy to become his lawyer, arrives with his wife Sue in the same stagecoach. During Sallie's welcoming party, Murphy sends Jess Evans and her gang to steal Chisum's cattle, which are taken to the U.S. Army to feed the Native Americans on a nearby reservation. A wandering Pat Garrett warns Chisum's men of the approaching horsemen; During the ensuing shootout, one of Chisum's wranglers dies and the cows run away. Chisum sends Judge JB Wilson to try Murphy's men for murder, but the damage is done and the army begins buying his animals from Murphy. McSween, not liking Murphy's methods, switches sides.
McSween, Tunstall and Chisum open a new store and bank to fight Murphy's monopoly. Billy, Garrett and several of Chisum's men travel to Santa Fe for supplies. Billy is nearly killed when Murphy has Evans attack the wagon train on his way back to Lincoln; in response, Tunstall decides to go to Santa Fe to ask Governor Axtell to intervene in the land war. Deputies Morton and Baker stopped Tunstall on the road, falsely accused him of cattle rustling, shot him, and planted a rifle to make it appear that Tunstall drew first.
Judge Wilson arrives in Lincoln during Tunstall's funeral. With Brady refusing to pursue his own men, Wilson deputizes Chisum and Garrett, who track down and capture the fugitive deputies in a nearby town. On the way back, Chisum separates from the group to go find the judge. Billy, eager for revenge on his friend and mentor, and skeptical that justice will be served for Lincoln, knocks out Garrett and kills Morton and Baker. He then goes to town and publicly murders Brady before fleeing. Murphy convinces Governor Axtell to fire Judge Wilson and appoint bounty hunter Dan Nodeen, who harbors an old grudge against Billy, as sheriff.
As a large force travels the countryside in search of Billy, he gathers his allies, starting with two of Tunstall's wranglers, Charlie Bowdre and Tom O'Folliard. They enter McSween's store to get dynamite to rob Murphy's bank, but Nodeen notices them inside and a long shootout begins between Murphy's men and Billy's. McSween, unarmed and unwilling to take part in the battle, asks that he and his wife be allowed to leave, but only Sue is allowed to do so. When the shooting starts again, she runs away to get Chisum. Murphy then asks his men to erect barricades in the city streets. McSween comes out to negotiate with Murphy, and Nodeen shoots him in cold blood.
Chisum and his men arrive in Lincoln, driving Murphy's cattle ahead of them to break through the barricades. Murphy's men are defeated, with Billy personally pursuing Evans and killing him. Chisum fights with Murphy and both men fall from a balcony. Murphy is impaled on a decorative bull horn that he was using as a weapon. Nodeen, whose treasurer is dead, leaves town, pursued by Billy.
Garret and Sallie begin a relationship. He was appointed sheriff of Lincoln County, and the territory's next governor, Lew Wallace, declared amnesty for those who participated in the Land Wars. Once peace has returned, Chisum climbs a hill to survey his land.
