Description of this Inspector La Bavure Poster

Inspector La Bavure is a French film comedy directed by Claude Zidi in 1980.

Michel's father, Jules Clément, was killed during a daring arrest while he was a police officer. On his deathbed, his son promised to become a police officer when he grew up. Since then, 20 years have passed and Michel has just passed his police inspector exam. As he is the worst in his class, he must stay in Paris. He is assigned as partner Marcel Watrin, who is about to retire. After some initial difficulties - Michel is taken for a criminal on the first day and beaten up by his new colleagues - the investigative work begins. Besides Watrin, journalist Marie-Anne Prossant is also present in the patrol car. She wants to write a report on the work of men in order to prove to her father, the press magnate Louis Prossant, that she can succeed without him. In a second-hand bookstore, Michel records the theft of two valuable dueling pistols which he later receives from his half-criminal friends as a gift of restitution from the police. Disguised as a thief, Michel brings the guns back to the second-hand bookstore, where both the saleswoman and Marie-Anne recognize him. But the surprisingly positive image they have of Michel quickly changes: the entire Parisian police have already been looking for the crazy thief Roger Morzini for years. By chance, they catch him committing a theft, but Michel's recklessness causes an accident which allows Morzini to escape.

Morzini goes underground and is physically transformed into the actor Gérard Depardieu at Doctor Haquenbusch's house, based on a photographic model. After the operation, he kills Haquenbusch. During his convalescence, he watches a television interview with Marie-Anne, in which she calls him a deranged man and insults the police by calling them incompetent. Morzini calls Marie-Anne and tells her that she will soon be able to convince herself of his character. Marie-Anne publishes the telephone call on the front page of the newspaper. Police director Mottet orders Marie-Anne to be followed in a conspicuous manner by the two most incompetent people in the police force. If Morzini were to plan his kidnapping following further provocations from Marie-Anne, a second team of experts would have to ensure his arrest. Michel and Marcel are chosen for open surveillance. Morzini, for his part, is not recognized in his new appearance and makes contact with Michel, introducing himself to him as the author of detective novels Antoine Collard. Michel befriends him, reveals valuable inside information and is soon suspected of being a mole within the police, working for Morzini. One day, when Morzini is invited to dinner at Michel's, he claims to want to play a joke on Marie-Anne as part of his new research on the novel, because with a little cleverness he can resemble Morzini. Michel participates in the alleged prank, organizes a secret meeting between Morzini and Marie-Anne and ridicules his police colleagues with a doll of Marie-Anne. For his part, Morzini takes the opportunity to take Marie-Anne to an isolated villa and demand a ransom of a billion francs from her father.

Michel is arrested as Morzini's aide, secretly equipped with a transmitter and convinced to escape with some difficulty. He notices by chance that a transmitter has been sewn into his clothes and gives them to a beggar. His mother provides him with new clothes and Michel himself takes action. With his half-criminal friends, he kidnaps Morzini's mother and makes it known on television. Morzini is furious and wants to run away with Marie-Anne, but he is stopped by Michel. He destroys the villa in which Morzini is hiding with an excavator and saves Marie-Anne using the excavator bucket. With her, he goes to a hotel where he quietly organizes the delivery of Louis Prossant's ransom which he has obtained in the meantime.
