Description of this Gremlins Poster
Gremlins is a 1984 American black comedy film directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus, starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday and Frances Lee McCain, with Howie Mandel serving as the voice of Gizmo, the main mogwai character. The film is inspired by folk legends of mischievous creatures who have caused malfunctions - "gremlins" - within the British Royal Air Force since the Second World War. The story follows a young man who receives a strange creature as a pet, which spawns other creatures that turn into destructive and mischievous little monsters that wreak havoc throughout a town on Christmas Eve.
The film was the subject of extensive merchandising campaigns and opted for dark comedy, balanced with the Christmas setting. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer of the film, which was produced by Michael Finnell.
Gremlins was released theatrically on June 8, 1984 by Warner Bros. with critical and commercial success. However, the film was heavily criticized for some of its more violent sequences. In response to this and similar complaints about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Spielberg suggested that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) change its rating system, which it did two months after the film's release. , creating a new PG-13 rating. The film was followed by a sequel, Gremlins 2, in 1990, which had a more satirical tone and parodied Hollywood sequels, and received generally positive reviews, but was a box office flop.
Randall Peltzer, a struggling inventor, visits a Chinatown antique store hoping to find a Christmas present for his son Billy. Inside, Randall discovers a small furry creature called a mogwai (Cantonese: 魔怪, "devil"). The owner, Mr. Wing, refuses to sell the creature to Randall, but his grandson secretly does so, warning Randall to remember three important rules: do not expose the mogwai to light, especially sunlight, which would kill him; do not let it come into contact with water; and above all, never feed him after midnight.
Randall returns home to Kingston Falls, where he gives the mogwai to Billy as a pet. Billy works at the local bank, but he fears that his dog Barney will be shot by Mrs. Deagle, a widow and miser. Randall names the mogwai "Gizmo" and explains the three rules to him. Gizmo is friendly and docile, but when Billy's young friend Pete accidentally spills water on Gizmo, five more mogwai emerge from his back, more rowdy mogwai led by the aggressive Stripe, named for the tuft of hair on his head. Billy shows one of the mogwai to his old elementary school science teacher, Mr. Hanson, which gives rise to another mogwai, which Hanson experiments on. Back at home, Stripe and his fellow mogwai trick Billy into feeding them after midnight by cutting the power cord to his alarm clock. They form cocoons, just like Hanson's mogwai, which soon hatch into mischievous dark green reptilian monsters, who torture Gizmo and attack Billy's mother Lynn. Hanson is killed by his gremlin.
Lynn and Billy manage to kill the gremlins, except for Stripe, who escapes and takes refuge at a local YMCA. There, Stripe jumps into the pool, giving birth to an army of gremlins who wreak havoc in Kingston Falls. Many people are injured or killed by the gremlins, including Mrs. Deagle. Billy reports the incident to the police, but they are of no help as they do not believe his story, even after he shows her Gizmo.
While Billy rescues his girlfriend, Kate Beringer, they hide in the abandoned bank where Kate reveals to Billy and Gizmo why she hates Christmas: when she was nine, her father disappeared on Christmas Eve and is not neither came home on Christmas Day; a few days later, he was found dead in their chimney while dressed as Santa Claus. A few days later, he is found dead in their chimney, dressed as Santa Claus. While he wanted to surprise her and his mother, he accidentally slipped and broke his neck while coming down the chimney. Still suffering from post-traumatic stress from this event, Kate admits that this is how she discovered the truth about Santa Claus.
Billy and Kate discover that the town has gone silent and the gremlins are watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the local theater. They set off a natural gas explosion, incinerating all the gremlins except Stripe, who has gone to commandeer candy from a Montgomery Ward store across the street. As morning approaches, they follow Stripe into the department store, where Stripe attempts to use a water fountain to spawn more gremlins. Gizmo opens a skylight, exposing Stripe to sunlight, which kills him.
As the local newspapers report the day's mysterious tragedies, Mr. Wing picks up Gizmo from the Peltzers. He criticizes both the Peltzers and Western society for their carelessness toward nature. However, as he prepares to leave, Gizmo, who has bonded with Billy, says goodbye to the young man. Touched, Mr. Wing then admits that Billy might be ready one day, and that in the meantime, Gizmo will be waiting for him.
