Description of this Friday the 13th Poster

Friday the 13th is a 1980 American independent slasher film produced and directed by Sean S. Cunningham, written by Victor Miller, starring Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, Laurie Bartram, Mark Nelson, Jeannine Taylor, Robbi Morgan and Kevin Bacon. The plot follows a group of teenage camp counselors who are murdered one by one by an unknown killer while trying to reopen an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past.

Encouraged by the success of John Carpenter's Halloween (1978), director Cunningham placed an ad for sale in Variety in early 1979, while Miller was still writing the screenplay. After casting in New York, filming took place in New Jersey during the summer of 1979, with an estimated budget of $550,000. A bidding war ensued for the finished film, and Paramount Pictures ended up acquiring it for domestic distribution, while Warner Bros. has obtained international distribution rights.

Released on May 9, 1980, Friday the 13th was a major box office success, grossing $59.8 million worldwide. Critical reaction was divided, with some praising the film's cinematography and music, while many others derided it for its depiction of graphic violence. In addition to being the first independent film of its genre to be distributed in the United States by a major studio, its box office success spawned a long series of sequels, a crossover with the A Nightmare film series on Elm Street and a reboot of the series in 2009. A direct sequel, Friday the 13th Part 2, was released a year later.

In 1958 at Camp Crystal Lake, counselors Barry Jackson and Claudette Hayes sneak into a storage cabin to have sex, where an unseen assailant murders them. In the present day, June 1980, camp counselor Annie Phillips is driven halfway to the reopened Camp Crystal Lake by Enos, a truck driver, despite old Crazy Ralph's warnings and reactions. disgusted with the residents. While driving, Enos warns Annie about the camp's troubled past, beginning with the drowning of a young boy in Crystal Lake in 1957. After being dropped off, she again calls upon an invisible person who drives her in front of the camp. When Annie escapes the vehicle, the killer chases her into the woods and slits her throat.

At camp, counselors Ned, Jack, Bill, Marcie, Brenda and Alice, along with owner Steve Christy, are refurbishing the cabins and facilities. As a storm approaches, Steve leaves the campsite to stock up on supplies. Ned sees someone entering a cabin and follows them. As Jack and Marcie make love in one of the cabin's bunk beds, they do not see Ned's body above them, his throat having been slit. When Marcie goes out to use the bathroom, Jack's throat is pierced by an arrow from under the bed. The killer follows Marcie into the bathroom and sticks an ax in her face. When Brenda goes to bed for the night, she hears the voice of a little boy calling for help and goes out to the archery range, where the lights come on. Brenda screams. Later, Steve returns and recognizes the invisible killer, who stabs him to death.

Worried about their friends' disappearance, Alice and Bill leave the main cabin to investigate. They find the ax in Brenda's bed, the phones disconnected, and Ned's truck inoperable. When the power goes out, Bill leaves to check the generator. Alice goes looking for him and finds his body pinned by arrows to the door to the generator room. She flees to the master cabin to hide, but is further traumatized when Brenda's body is thrown out the window. Soon after, Alice sees a vehicle stop and rushes out, thinking it's Steve. Instead, she is greeted by Mrs. Voorhees, a middle-aged woman who claims to be an old friend of Steve and his family.

She reveals that her son, Jason, was the young boy who drowned in 1957, attributing his death to counselors' negligence because they were having sex instead. Revealing herself to be the assassin, she attempts to kill Alice, but she knocks her out. On the shore, Mrs. Voorhees tries to kill Alice again with a machete, but Alice gains the advantage and decapitates her. Exhausted, Alice boards and falls asleep in a canoe that floats on Crystal Lake. Suddenly, Jason's rotting corpse drags him into the lake. She then wakes up in a hospital, surrounded by a police sergeant and medical staff who treat her. When Alice asks about Jason, the sergeant says there was no sign of the boy. She says, "So he's still there," while the lake is shown with ripples in the water.
