Description of this Charlie Chaplin Circus Film Poster
The tramp is wrongly suspected of pickpocketing and pursued by the police. In his escape, he bursts into a circus show and involuntarily makes the audience laugh. The circus director then wants to hire him as a clown. But the tramp can't be funny on command, which is why he's only hired as a prop man. Thanks to the misadventures that happen to him, he becomes the main attraction of the circus - without realizing it himself and therefore continuing to receive the same poor salary. It is Merna, an artistic rider and the director's daughter-in-law, who opens the tramp's eyes and ensures that the circus director must now pay him properly. Merna is regularly beaten by her stepfather. By standing up for her as the star of the shows, the tramp also gets the circus director to treat her better.
The tramp falls in love with Merna and dreams of a joint future, especially when a fortune teller predicts to Merna that she will soon find happiness with a "tall and handsome man" who is already near her. However, Merna soon after meets the newly hired tightrope walker Rex, with whom she falls in love immediately. The tramp's heartache is reflected in his performances, which become less and less funny. The jealous tramp instead tries tightrope walking with mixed success. When Rex is not found for a performance, the unscrupulous circus director sends the tramp to the wire at the risk of his life. Despite major balance problems and a few monkeys harassing him, he survives the act without falling.
When, shortly afterwards, the circus director hits Merna again and the tramp beats him for it, he is fired. Merna wants to run away with the tramp, but he suspects that they cannot have a future together. Instead, he arranges for Rex and Merna to get married. The next day, when the circus director wants to hit Merna again, Rex explains to him that she is now his wife and that he must not hit her. As the traveling circus leaves, the tramp is left alone.
