Description of this Manon des Sources Film Poster

Manon des sources is the second part of the French novel Leseaux des collines, adapted by Marcel Pagnol and released in 1986. The first part is entitled Jean de Florette.

Manon has become a beautiful adult girl and lives as a shepherdess in the hills. Ugolin and Papet are having success with their carnation cultivation. In the village lives the new teacher Bernard, who travels the Provençal hills and whom Manon observes. The young girl falls in love with the handsome young man. Ugolin regularly goes hunting and in turn observes Manon. He falls in love with the girl, which at the same time causes him remorse. Manon accidentally finds the spring that supplies the village with water. By chance, she had eavesdropped on two villagers and learned that everyone in the village knew about the existence of the spring on her father's land and was therefore complicit in his death. After discovering the spring, she decides to block it in the same way as Papet and Ugolin had done with the spring on her father's land. Suddenly, the village finds itself without water. Ugolin is not only panicking because of his love madness, but now his carnations are in danger of being destroyed. During Sunday mass, the villagers hear in the priest's sermon that there is a crime in the village circle. Almost everyone knows that they are Ugolin and Papet. A procession must remedy this and Manon, as an orphan, must participate in it. At first, she refuses. But when she accuses Ugolin and Papet in front of the assembled village of being responsible for her father's death, Bernard is also involved in the story. Together with Bernard, she frees the spring from the blockage and, during the procession, the village fountain is filled with water again. Ugolin commits suicide, because he now knows that Manon will never marry him.

Manon and Bernard get married, while Papet pays his respects at Ugolin's grave. An old blind lady tells Papet about a letter that Florette, his lifelong love, had written to him while he was a soldier in Africa. He had never received this letter. He then learns that Florette was pregnant and that Jean de Florette was her son. Manon is therefore his granddaughter. Old Papet then loses all desire to live. In his will, he bequeaths his entire fortune to Manon and confesses his entire story to her. After doing this, he dresses finely and lies down in bed, where he is found dead the next morning by his housekeeper.
