Description of this Jean-Claude Van Damme Film Poster

Cyborg is a 1989 American cyberpunk martial arts film directed by Albert Pyun. Jean-Claude van Damme plays Gibson Rickenbacker, a mercenary who faces off against a group of murderous marauders led by Fender Tremolo (Vincent Klyn) on the east coast of the United States in a post-apocalyptic future. It was followed by the sequels Cyborg 2 (1993) and Cyborg 3: The Recycler (1994).

A plague known as the Living Death paralyzes civilization. A small group of surviving scientists and doctors - located in Atlanta, where the CDC is located - are working on a cure to save what's left of humanity. To carry out their work, they need information stored in a computer system in New York. Pearl Prophet volunteers for this dangerous courier mission and is transformed into a cyborg through surgical augmentation.

Pearl, accompanied by her bodyguard Marshall Strat, recovers the data in New York but is pursued by the vicious Fender Tremolo and his band of pirates. Fender wants the cure to have a monopoly on its production. Strat, seriously injured fighting the pirates, asks Pearl to leave him and find a mercenary, called a "slinger", who can escort him to safety. She is trapped but is saved by a slinger named Gibson Rickenbacker. After explaining his situation, they are invaded by Fender's gang, and Gibson is knocked unconscious by falling debris. Fender demands that she accompany him to Atlanta or die.

Fender's gang massacres a family and steals their boat. They headed south to Atlanta via the Intracoastal Waterway with the captive Pearl. Gibson, who had followed the pirates, arrived at the scene of the massacre later that night. A ghostly figure attacks him, but he incapacitates it. It is Nady Simmons, a young woman who mistook him for a pirate. Nady, whose family was decimated by the plague, joins Gibson. Gibson cares less about finding a cure for the plague than killing Fender. Gibson and Nady head south through the wasteland, where bandits ambush them. Worried about Nady, Gibson tries in vain to convince her to stay away. After refusing to sleep with Nady, Gibson reveals that all he cares about is getting revenge on Fender, who killed his lover and destroyed his chance at a normal life and a family.

Intercepting Fender and his team near Charleston, South Carolina, Gibson defeated most of his men, but Fender shot him with an air rifle. Now nursing his gunshot wound, Gibson realizes that Haley (his deceased lover's younger sister whom Fender kidnapped) is now a loyal member of Fender's crew. He flees the pirates and finds himself alone with Pearl and Nady. Pearl refuses to go with him - she believes that Gibson is not strong enough to defeat Fender and will not be able to bring her back to Atlanta safely. She says she will go with Fender and lure him to his death in Atlanta, where she has resources at her disposal.

Tired, injured, and outnumbered, Gibson flees with Nady through the sewer to a salt marsh, where they are pursued by the rest of the pirates and eventually separated from each other. Gibson is beaten soundly by Fender and crucified on top of the mast of a beached and abandoned ship. Haley lingers at the scene but leaves with Fender anyway. Gibson spends the night on the cross. In the morning, close to death, he strikes the mast several times with his dangling foot in a final fit of rage. The pole breaks, sending him crashing to the ground, his arms still tied and nailed to the cross. Finally, Nady emerges from the swamp to free him.

Gibson and Nady intercept Fender again in Atlanta, this time better prepared. Fender's gang is taken out one by one until he and Gibson face off. During their fight, Nady lunges at Fender with a knife, but he stabs and kills her. Gibson in turn stabs Fender in the chest. Believing him dead, Gibson kisses Haley, who during the battle turned on Fender. However, Fender gets back up, and they continue to fight in a nearby shed, where Gibson finally kills Fender by impaling him on a meat hook. Gibson and Haley escort Pearl to her final destination before leaving.
