Description of this Fahrenheit 451 Film Poster
Fahrenheit 451 is a 1966 British dystopian drama film directed by François Truffaut and starring Julie Christie, Oskar Werner and Cyril Cusack. Based on Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel of the same name, the film takes place in a controlled society, in an oppressive future, where the government sends firefighters to destroy all literature to prevent revolution and thought. This is Truffaut's first color film[4] and his only non-French-speaking film. At the 27th Venice International Film Festival, Fahrenheit 451 was nominated for the Golden Lion.
In the future, a totalitarian government employs a force known as the "Firemen" to seek out and destroy all literature. They have the power to search anyone, anywhere, at any time, and burn any books they find. One of the firefighters, Guy Montag, meets one of his neighbors, Clarisse, a young teacher who risks being fired because of her unorthodox opinions. They discuss his work and she asks him if he reads the books he burns. Curious, he begins hiding books in his house and reading them, starting with David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. This leads to conflict with his wife, Linda, who is more concerned with being popular enough to be part of The Family, an interactive television show that calls its viewers "cousins".
At the house of an underground book collector, Fire Captain Beatty talks at length with Montag about how books make people unhappy and make them want to think they are better than others, which is considered antisocial. The book collector, an old woman seen several times with Clarisse during Montag's journeys between his home and work, refuses to leave her house, preferring to burn herself and the house so that she can die. with his books.
Returning home that day, Montag tries to tell Linda and her friends about this woman who martyred herself in the name of books and confronts them with the fact that they know nothing about what is happening in the world , calling them zombies and telling them they're just killing time instead of living life. Disturbed by Montag's behavior, Linda's friends try to leave, but Montag stops them by forcing them to sit and listen to him read a passage from a novel. During the reading, one of Linda's friends breaks down in tears, aware of the feelings she has suppressed for years, while Linda's other friends leave, disgusted by Montag's supposed cruelty and the unhealthy content of the novel.
That night, Montag dreams that Clarisse is the book collector who committed suicide. The same night, Clarisse's house is broken into, but she escapes through a trapdoor in the roof, thanks to her uncle. Montag breaks into Beatty's office, looking for information on Clarisse's disappearance, and is caught but not punished.
Montag meets Clarisse and helps her break into her house to destroy papers that would allow the firefighters to find other people like her. She tells him about the "book people", a hidden sect of law-breaking people, each of whom has memorized a book to keep it alive. Later, Montag tells Beatty that he is resigning, but he is convinced to make one last intervention, which turns out to be Montag's house.
Linda leaves the house, telling Montag that she can't live with his obsession with books and leaves him to be punished by the fire department. Angry, he destroys the room and the television before setting fire to the books. Beatty lectures him about books and pulls one last book from Montag's coat, causing Montag to kill him with a flamethrower. He escapes and finds the book people, where he sees his "capture" on television, staged to entertain the masses and because the government does not want anyone to know he is alive.
