Description of this Deliverance Film Poster

Deliverance is a 1972 American adventure film directed by John Boorman. Four metropolitan cities, played by Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox, take a canoe trip through a river landscape, which will soon be sacrificed for the construction of a dam. Their encounter with two residents results in an act of violence, which is quickly followed by others.

The film is based on the first novel River Drive by American author James Dickey, published in 1970, who also wrote the screenplay and played the Sheriff of Aintry in a supporting role.

Ed Gentry, Lewis Medlock, Bobby Trippe and Drew Ballinger, traveling from Atlanta, undertake a canoe tour on the fictional, remote and wild Cahulawassee River in the US state of Georgia in the Appalachian Mountains. The valley will soon be flooded by the construction of a dam.

From the start of their journey, it is clear that they are strangers in a strange world. The inhabitants of the region behave without interest or disdain towards them. While looking for drivers to get their cars to their destination, Drew manages to connect with a disabled boy by challenging him on guitar, after which the boy responds on his banjo, which ultimately leads to being in a musical duel against the 'other . When Drew wants to congratulate the boy on the victory afterwards, he refuses to shake his hand.

After a hostile conversation with an aggressive hillbillyman, Ed feels unwell and suggests returning to town, which Lewis refuses. The four men are divided into two canoes, and leader Lewis, who also has a hunting bow, quickly takes command of the tour, leading to tension within the group. On the second day, Bobby and Ed show up early, encountering two armed rednecks. Ed is tied to a tree, Bobby raped. Before Ed can also be sexually abused, the incoming Lewis kills one of the attackers with an arrow. The other can escape into the wild.

Lewis, Ed and Bobby decide against Drew's resistance to bury the dead and not report the incident to local authorities. Lewis doesn't expect a fair verdict from a local jury, and Bobby doesn't want his rape known. The men continue their journey through the rapids. At a dangerous moment, Drew suddenly falls into the water, one of the canoes is destroyed and Lewis breaks his thigh. Lewis, Ed and Bobby are able to escape to the shore. Lewis claims to have heard a gunshot and is convinced that Drew was shot. The men suspect that the attacker is the refugee Hillbill who is now keeping them at bay from above, at the edge of the gorge. At the urging of his comrades, Ed, armed with Lewis's bow, climbs the rocks and kills the gunman the next morning with an arrow.

Ed pushes the dead into the river, weighted down with stones, then the three continue their journey in the remaining canoe. Shortly after, they come across Drew's body. They can't determine if he died from a gunshot, as Lewis claims. They don't even know if the shooter Ed killed was the second one, a previously escaped violent offender or not just a random hunter. Drew's body is also sunk in the river, and they decide to tell the authorities that Drew fell from the canoe and disappeared in the floods.

Eventually, they reach their destination Aintry and Lewis is hospitalized. Ed and Bobby tell the sheriff the agreed-upon story of their tour without mentioning the two strange men. Although the sheriff does not believe them - among others, a local hunter, a brother-in-law of the auxiliary sheriff, goes missing and part of the destroyed boat is found further upstream from the location described, he lets them go for lack of evidence. To say goodbye to them, he advises them never to do it again and not to show up in the area. Ed sees the townspeople exhuming their dead to bury them in another cemetery. The ways of men are separated. After returning to his family, Ed has a nightmare in which he sees a dead man's hand coming out of the river. The film ends with an attitude of the river, on which the movements of the waves indicate.
