Description of this César Pagnol Poster
César is a 1936 French film, written and directed by Marcel Pagnol. This is the last part of his Marseille trilogy, started with the film Marius and followed by Fanny. Unlike the other two films in the trilogy, César is not based on a play by Pagnol, but written directly as a film script. In 1946, Pagnol adapted the screenplay as a play.
Honoré Panisse is dying, happily, with his friends, his wife and his son by his side. He confesses to the priest in front of his friends; he insists that the doctor tell the truth. But he cannot bring himself to tell his son Césariot that his real father is Marius, the absent son of César, Césariot's godfather. Panisse leaves this care to Fanny, the little one's mother. Pretending that he is going to see a friend, Césariot seeks out Marius, who has become a mechanic in Toulon. Posing as a journalist, Césariot spends time with Marius and leaves believing stories of burglaries and drug trafficking. Only once the truth is revealed will Marius, Fanny, César and Césariot be able to move beyond the lies, however benign they may be.
