Description of this Cartridge Poster
"Cartouche" is a French adventure film directed by Philippe de Broca and released in 1962. The story takes place in 18th century France, where justice is corrupt and the people are oppressed. In this context, the brigand Cartouche, played by Jean-Paul Belmondo, emerges as a popular hero, protecting the most deprived and defying the authorities.
The film begins with the meeting between Cartouche and the beautiful Venus, a young gypsy played by Claudia Cardinale. Together, they decide to rob the rich and redistribute their loot to the poorest. But their path crosses that of Lieutenant General La Reynie, played by Jean Rochefort, who opposes their action and launches a merciless hunt against Cartouche and his gang.
Between chases, epic battles and incredible adventures, Cartouche and his acolytes lead a fierce fight against the police. But this struggle is also tinged with love and betrayal, with the character of Venus who must make a difficult choice between her love for Cartouche and her duty as a gypsy.
The film is carried by the charismatic performance of Jean-Paul Belmondo, who perfectly embodies the character of Cartouche, at once seductive, courageous and clever. Philippe de Broca's direction is also remarkable, with careful sets, spectacular action scenes and a captivating soundtrack.
Beyond its purely entertaining aspect, “Cartouche” is also a reflection on justice and freedom, highlighting the struggle of the oppressed to make themselves heard. An emblematic film of French cinema, which continues to captivate spectators even today.
