Description of this Poster An American In Paris

An American in Paris is a 1951 American musical comedy film inspired by the 1928 orchestral composition, An American in Paris, by George Gershwin. With Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron (for his cinema debut), Oscar Levant, Georges Guétary and Nina Foch, the film takes place in Paris. It was directed by Vincente Minnelli from a screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner. The music is by George Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira, and additional music by Johnny Green and Saul Chaplin, the musical directors.

The film's story is interspersed with dance numbers choreographed by Gene Kelly and set to music by Gershwin. MGM executive Arthur Freed purchased Gershwin's music catalog from George's brother Ira in the late 1940s, George having died in 1937. Some of the tunes from this catalog were included in the film, such as “I Got Rhythm” and “Love Is Here to Stay.” Other songs from the film include "I'll Build A Stairway to Paradise" and "'S Wonderful". The film's highlight is the ballet "The American in Paris," a 17-minute dialogue-free dance featuring Kelly and Caron to music from Gershwin's An American in Paris. 4] Filming the ballet sequence cost nearly half a million dollars. It was filmed on 44 sets in the MGM backyard.

An American in Paris has enjoyed enormous success: it has been nominated for eight Academy Awards, won six (including Best Picture) and received other accolades. In 1993, it was selected for preservation by the United States Library of Congress in the National Film Registry for its "cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance."[5][6]It is ranked ninth among the greatest musicals of the AFI.

According to Leslie Caron during a 2009 interview on Paul O'Grady's show, the film was the subject of controversy with the Hays Office over part of its chair dancing sequence; the censor who viewed the scene called it "sexually provocative", which surprised Caron who replied "What can you do with a chair?"
