Description of this American Graffiti Poster
American Graffiti is a 1973 American comedy-drama film, directed by George Lucas, produced by Francis Ford Coppola, written by Willard Huyck, Gloria Katz and Lucas, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard (as Ronny Howard), Paul Le Mat, Harrison Ford, Charles Martin Smith, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Bo Hopkins and Wolfman Jack. Suzanne Somers, Kathleen Quinlan, Debralee Scott and Joe Spano also appear in the film. The film, set in Modesto, California, in 1962, is a study of cruise culture and the beginnings of rock 'n' roll, which was popular at the time in Lucas's age group. Through a series of vignettes, it tells the story of a group of teenagers and their adventures over the course of one night.
While Lucas was working on his first film, THX 1138, Coppola asked him to write a coming-of-age film. The genesis of American Graffiti takes place in Modesto in the early 1960s, during Lucas' adolescence. He failed to pitch the concept to financiers and distributors, but found favor with Universal Pictures after every other major studio turned it down. Filming was originally scheduled to take place in San Rafael, California, but the production team was denied permission to film beyond a second day. As a result, production was moved to Petaluma. The film is the first film to be produced by George Lucas' company, Lucasfilm.
American Graffiti had its world premiere on August 2, 1973 at the Locarno International Film Festival, Switzerland, and was released on August 11, 1973 in the United States. The film received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.[2] Produced on a budget of $777,000,[1] it became one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Since its initial release, American Graffiti has grossed an estimated $200 million in box office and home video sales, not including merchandise. In 1995, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. 3] A sequel, More American Graffiti, was released in 1979.
