Description of this 42nd Street Poster
42nd Street is a 1933 American pre-Code musical film directed by Lloyd Bacon, with a screenplay by Rian James and James Seymour (plus uncredited contributions by Whitney Bolton), adapted from the 1932 novel of the same name written by Bradford Ropes. Featuring a cast including Warner Baxter, Bebe Daniels, George Brent, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell and Ginger Rogers, the film revolves around rehearsals for a Broadway show at the height of the Great Depression, its cast and crew . The film was choreographed by Busby Berkeley, with music by Harry Warren and lyrics by Al Dubin.
This behind-the-scenes musical was a big box office success and is now a classic. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 6th Academy Awards. In 1998, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress because it is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." In 2006, it placed 13th on the American Film Institute's list of best musicals. A stage adaptation of the film opened on Broadway in 1980 and won two Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
