Description of this Friday the 13th Poster

Friday the 13th Chapter V: A New Terror is a 1985 American horror film directed by Danny Steinmann starring Melanie Kinnaman, John Shepherd, and Shavar Ross. It is the fifth installment in the Friday the 13th franchise. The story takes place years after the events of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, and follows teenager Tommy Jarvis (Shepherd), who is committed to a halfway house near Crystal Lake because of nightmares of serial killer Jason Voorhees, whom he killed as a child. Tommy must face his fears when a new murderer wearing a hockey mask starts a new series of violent killings in the area.

A New Terror features a high number of on-screen murders. In addition to its gore and violence, the film is also known for its explicit nudity, sex scenes and numerous depictions of illicit drug use. Peter Bracke's book, Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th, explains that behind the scenes the production was marred by the use of hard drugs. The film also features an appearance by Corey Feldman, who played the role of Tommy Jarvis in the previous film.

Filmed in California in 1984 on a budget of $2.2 million, A New Beginning was released theatrically on March 22, 1985 and grossed $22 million at the U.S. box office. The film was initially intended to set up a new trilogy of films with a different villain for the series but, after a disappointing reception from fans and a sharp drop in box office receipts after the third part and the final chapter, Jason Voorhees was brought back for the following episode Friday the 13th, Chapter VI: Jason the Walking Dead (1986) and has been the main antagonist of the series ever since. In addition to its low box office receipts, the film received mostly negative reviews.

Several years after the death of Jason Voorhees, Tommy Jarvis, a teenager, is tormented by nightmares of the mass killer, leading to his confinement in numerous psychiatric hospitals. He was eventually transferred to the Pinehurst halfway house, run by Dr. Matt Letter and his assistant Pam Roberts. There, Tommy meets a circle of other teenagers, including lovers Eddie Kelso and Tina McCarthy, stutterer Jake Patterson, goth Violet Moraine, serious Robin Brown, compulsive eater Joey Burns, and young Reggie Winter, whose grown-up -father George Winter works as the establishment's cook. The group is disliked by their neighbor Ethel Hubbard, as Eddie and Tina have made a habit of having sex on her property. For this reason, Matt forbids the group from venturing outside the grounds of the establishment.

Vic Faden, another patient at the institute, is overcome by a fit of madness caused by Joey's constant harassment and brutally kills him with an axe, leading to his arrest. The same evening, two greasers, Vinnie and Pete, are murdered by an unseen assailant after a car breaks down, and a restaurant waitress and her boyfriend are killed the following night. The sheriff theorizes that Jason Voorhees has come back to life and is the perpetrator of these murders, while Tommy himself is made a suspect.

The next morning, Eddie and Tina go disobedient in the forest and make love. They are spotted by Raymond Joffroy, Ethel's farmer, who is killed shortly after. After washing in the creek, Eddie discovers that Tina has been murdered, and he suffers the same fate. Meanwhile, Reggie begs his grandfather to visit his brother Demon, who has just returned to town, and Pam offers to accompany him by bringing Tommy. While Pam and Reggie enjoy enchiladas with Demon and his girlfriend Anita, Tommy meets Ethel's son Junior and fights with him, but then runs away into the forest after realizing his actions. After Pam and Reggie go looking for Tommy, Demon gets bad diarrhea from the enchiladas and runs to the bathroom. While using the toilet, he and Anita are massacred. Upon their return to the institute, Pam and Reggie are informed of the disappearance of Matt and Reggie's grandfather. Pam goes looking for them, entrusting Reggie to Violet, Jake and Robin. At this point, Ethel and Junior are killed, as well as Jake, Robin and Violet after Reggie falls asleep. Reggie wakes up just as Pam returns, and they discover the corpses of the trio in Tommy's room. Moments later, the killer, who appears to be a resurrected Jason Voorhees, bursts into the house.

After a long chase during which Pam and Reggie find the bodies of Matt and Reggie's grandfather, Jason is hit by a tractor and then lured into a barn. Tommy returns and is attacked by Jason, but he fights back. Eventually, Tommy throws Jason from the attic window onto a tractor harrow, killing him instantly. In the process, the killer's hockey mask falls off, revealing him to be Roy Burns, one of the paramedics who arrived at the scene of Joey's murder. The police then identify Roy as Joey's father and determine that he lost his mind after his son's death and sought revenge based on Jason's stories. While recovering in the hospital, Tommy has another hallucination of Jason, but he faces his fears and makes him disappear. He then hears Pam approaching and breaks the window to make it appear that he has escaped. When Pam rushes inside, Tommy appears behind the door, wearing Roy's hockey mask and brandishing a kitchen knife.
