Description of this Police Academy Poster
Police Academy is a 1984 American comedy film directed by Hugh Wilson in his first directorial debut, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The plot follows a new recruitment policy for an unnamed city's police academy, which accepts any recruit wishing to apply and study to become a police officer. The film stars Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall and GW Bailey.
The film was produced by The Ladd Company. It was released on March 23, 1984[5] and grossed $8.5 million in its opening weekend and over $149 million worldwide, on a budget of $4.5 million, and remains the most successful film in the series as of 2022. The film spawned six sequels in the Police Academy franchise.
Due to a shortage of police officers, Mary Sue Beal, mayor of a large, unnamed city, demands that the police department accept all recruitment applications. Captain Reed gives easygoing repeat offender Carey Mahoney a choice: enroll in the police academy to better himself or go straight to prison as a parole violator. Mahoney accepts the request, but expects to perform poorly enough to be quickly fired for cause. Police Chief Henry Hurst, outraged by the mayor's plan, decides to make the experience so bad for all the new recruits that they will give up and quit.
Lieutenant Thaddeus Harris makes their lives miserable, although Commander Eric Lassard wants to give the new cadets a chance. Harris appoints Copeland and Blankes as squad leaders to help him secretly carry out his plan.
Lassard reveals to Mahoney his agreement with Captain Reed: Mahoney must remain at the police academy until the end of his contract. Mahoney falls in love with junior Karen Thompson and befriends fellow students Larvell Jones, a human beatboxer, George Martin, a ladies' man, Eugene Tackleberry, a gun-obsessed security guard, Leslie Barbara, a cowardly man , Douglas Fackler, an accident victim, and Moses Hightower, a gentle giant.
Blankes and Copeland investigate a party thrown by Mahoney, who tricks them into telling them that the party is at the Blue Oyster, which they quickly discover after arriving is actually a gay biker bar. As revenge, they place a prostitute in Mahoney's dorm, so that she will be found during the final room checks and he will be expelled. Smuggling her off campus before this happens, Mahoney is forced to hide with her under a microphoned desk, just as Commander Lassard leads a group of fellow officers into the meeting room. While Mahoney is not looking, the prostitute performs oral sex on Lassard who is speaking at the lectern. Later, Mahoney comes out from under the lectern and finds Lassard still present, leading him to assume that it was Mahoney who committed the act. Hightower reveals to Mahoney that he hasn't driven a car since he was 12 years old. To help Hightower study for his driving test, they steal Copeland's small two-door Honda, after ripping out the front seats so Hightower can fit inside. After Hightower passes the exam, Copeland racially insults cadet Laverne Hooks for causing an accident. Hightower, enraged by the racial slur, overturns Copeland's police car while he is still inside. Harris kicks Hightower out of the academy, disturbing the other cadets.
Blankes and Copeland fail to convince Mahoney to fight them after discovering Copeland's wrecked car. Barbara comes to Mahoney's defense and knocks Copeland out with her metal lunch tray. Blankes fights back and Mahoney gets involved in a fight. When Harris asks who started the fight, Mahoney takes the blame to protect Barbara's cadet status, and Mahoney is ultimately kicked out of the academy.
While in town, Fackler throws an apple out of the window of his police car, which hits a man in the back of the head. This action sets off a chain reaction of violence that quickly turns into a full-blown riot. Mahoney, about to leave, joins the other cadets to help calm the angry crowd. The cadets are accidentally transported to the epicenter of the riot, and a criminal steals the revolvers from Blankes and Copeland, who are then hiding in the Blue Oyster Bar, as the riot escalates. A gang and its leader capture Harris and take him hostage. Mahoney tries to save Harris, but he is also taken hostage. Hightower appears, tricks the gang leader and easily throws him down the stairs only to be stopped by Hooks.
Both Mahoney and Hightower are reinstated, and for saving Harris and capturing his kidnapper, they receive the academy's highest honor and medals, after which all police cadets graduate from the academy.
