Description of this Ending History Poster

The Neverending Story II: A New Chapter is a 1990 fantasy film and a sequel to The Neverending Story. It was directed by George T. Miller and stars Jonathan Brandis as Bastian Bux, Kenny Morrison as Atreyu, and Alexandra Johnes as the Childish Empress. The only returning actor from the first film is Thomas Hill as Carl Conrad Coreander. The film takes plot elements from Michael Ende's novel The Neverending Story (mainly the second half), but introduces a new plot. When released theatrically in the United States in 1991, Bugs Bunny's Box-Office animated short Bunny was shown before the film. This short was also included on the VHS and LaserDisc release later that year.

Bastian Balthazar Bux seeks to join his school's swim team, but his ability to jump off the diving board is tainted by his acrophobia (fear of heights). He goes to Carl Conrad Coreander's antique bookstore to seek advice on courage, where he rediscovers the Neverending Story and hears the childlike Empress calling for help.

Bastian takes the book home as the Auryn amulet magically detaches from the book cover. Bastian takes it and is summoned to Fantasia, where he encounters a bird-like creature named Nimbly and reunites with Atreyu. After the group encounters armored giants and escapes from them, Bastian realizes that a force called "Void" is spreading throughout Fantasia. This force was created by the evil witch Xayide, who seeks power over Fantasia. To hinder Bastian's quest, Tri-Face, Xayide's inventor, develops a device that deprives Bastian of a memory every time he uses the Auryn amulet to make a wish. Nimbly is sent as a spy to persuade Bastian to make wishes until he is unable to remember why he came to Fantasia.

Bastian and Atreyu search for and capture Xayide. She seems to abandon her quest for power and agrees to lead them to the Child Empress. During the trip to the Empress's castle, Xayide makes Bastian believe that his friends are going to turn against him and manages to make him make a series of ridiculous wishes. It also becomes obvious to Atreyu that they are being led aimlessly.

Meanwhile, Barney, Bastian's father, noticed his son missing. He finds The Neverending Story in Bastian's room and sees a sticker on the cover indicating the address of the bookstore. Barney rushes to confront Mr. Coreander, who simply tells him that he will find the answers to the question of his son's whereabouts in the book. Returning later with a police officer, Barney is shocked to see the bookstore abandoned. Eventually, Barney reads the book and is surprised to see that his son's exploits in Fantasia are written by the book itself and he is mentioned in it.

Atreyu determines what Xayide is up to, while Bastian is completely convinced that Atreyu has turned against him. During a struggle between the two, Atreyu is knocked off a cliff and falls to his death. Back at Xayide's house, Bastian discovers the device for himself and learns that he only has two memories left, those of his mother and his father.

Bastian uses the penultimate memory of his mother to wish Atreyu back to life. Xayide tries to force Bastian to use his last wish to return home. Bastian agrees to make his last wish, but instead wishes that the witch "had a heart". This fills Xayide with emotion, canceling out the emptiness inside her that she controls. Overwhelmed with compassion, Xayide explodes in a blast of light, and Fantasia is restored, along with Bastian's memories.

Once freed, the Childish Empress thanks Bastian for his help and the latter gives her the Auryn amulet. She shows him the way home: a cliff overlooking a waterfall, to help Bastian overcome his fear of heights.

Encouraged by Barney and Atreyu, Bastian jumps down and returns home safely, while the Auryn amulet magically returns to the cover of the book.
