Description of this Neverending Story Movie Poster

The Neverending Story is a film released on April 6, 1984, a West German and American co-production in the fantasy genre. It was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, and the screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Ende. It starred Noah Hathaway and Barret Oliver in the lead roles. It was produced by Bernd Eichinger and Dieter Giessler.

At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film produced outside of the United States or the Soviet Union. The film was the first in The NeverEnding Story series. The film only adapts the first half of the book and therefore does not convey the message of the title as depicted in the novel. The second half of the book was later used as a rough basis for the second film, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990). The third film, The NeverEnding Story III: Escape from Fantasia (1994), has an original plot that is not based on the book.

Bastian Baltasar Bux (Barret Oliver) is a shy 10-year-old boy, a big reader, who is bullied at school, as he is frequently mistreated by his classmates. One day, while fleeing from them, he hides in a bookstore. The bookstore owner, Mr. Koreander (Thomas Hill), warns him about the danger of a book he is reading at the time, called The Neverending Story. . However, Bastian cannot resist the temptation and takes advantage of Mr. Koreander's thoughtlessness to take it, leaving him a note with the promise of returning it.

He manages to sneak into the old attic of his school, and impatiently begins to read. The book tells the story of young Atreyu (Noah Hathaway), who was chosen to save the kingdom of Fantasia from a destructive force called "the Nothing" that is slowly consuming everything. Bastian can't stop reading the story and fully immerses himself in the world of Atreyu, with its fantastical beings like dwarves, racing snails and makeshift dragons. When all seems lost for Fantasia and the lost Atreyu believes he has failed in his mission to destroy the "Nothingness", Bastian realizes that the savior boy of the adventure on whom he has placed all his hopes is not Atreyu the warrior , but himself.

In order to save the childish Empress (Tami Stronach), and therefore Fantasia, he finally does what the characters in the story themselves ask him to do: shout the much-requested new name for the Empress. In doing so, Bastian comes face to face with the princess. She holds a seed containing all that is left of Fantasia in her hands and asks Bastian to stand before her with the seed in his hand and make a wish for a new world. Bastian does as the princess asks and Fantasia blooms again. Bastian flies over Falkor (Alan Oppenheimer), the lucky dragon who befriended Atreyu, to see the kingdom and its inhabitants restored. When Atreyu makes his next wish, Bastian directs him to the real world to scare the children who were chasing him on the street near Mr. Koreander's bookstore. After following them flying down an alley, they make their way through a trash can and Bastian and the dragon laugh, while the narrator says, "And Bastian made many, many more wishes and had many more wonderful adventures before returning to the routine world of everyday life, but that's another story."
