Description of this Havana Club Metal Sign
Havana Club is a rum brand established in Cuba in 1934. Originally produced in Cárdenas, Cuba, by the family business José Arechabala SA, the brand was nationalized after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. In 1993, the French company Pernod Ricard and the Cuban government created a 50/50 public joint venture called Corporación Cuba Ron. They started exporting this version of Havana Club all over the world except the United States due to the embargo put in place by the American government.
Bacardi, another Cuban family that had left Cuba after the Cuban Revolution, having purchased the original Havana Club recipe from the Arechabala family, also began producing Havana Club rum in 1994, a competing product made in Puerto Rico and sold in the USA.
Bacardi and Pernod Ricard are engaged in an ongoing dispute over ownership of the name "Havana Club."
