Description of this Jules Et Jim Poster

Jules et Jim is a French romance film by director François Truffaut, based on the novel of the same name by Henri-Pierre Roché, and considered a classic of the French New Wave.

After the credits, to which images of the main characters of the film are already associated - Catherine, Jules, Jim, Albert and little Sabine - a voice-over narrator introduces the time, place and start of the action in two sentences: "In 1912, Jules came to Paris. He had received a card for the artists' ball from Jim, whom he only vaguely knew. Very quickly, the French Jim and the Austrian Jules become friends. They not only share their interest in literature, but also and above all in women. However, Jim has in Gilberte a faithful partner to whom he can always return.

At Albert, a friend of Jules, they see slides of ancient statues. One of them, a female figure with an archaic smile, particularly fascinates them. They travel to the Adriatic island, where the statue is on display in an open-air museum. The way the narrator summarizes their experience suggests that it will be fatal: "Had they ever encountered this smile? - No, never. - What would they do if they encountered it one day? - They would follow it".

On their return, they meet Catherine, a French woman, with whom they find the same smile. In the short time that their friendship lasted, they happened to have affairs with the same women. But now Jules says: "Not that one, please, Jim! What follows is the happiest period of all three of their lives. Jules and Catherine love each other and, together with Jim, they enjoy a certain time of a carefree life by the sea. As soon as they return to Paris, signs indicate that the happiness shared by three will not last When Jules, during a night walk by the Seine, laughs. of "the nature of women", Catherine throws herself into the river This does not seem like a suicide attempt, but rather an announcement of what she is capable of.

But a short time later, Jules and Catherine telephone Jim, full of joy: “We are going to get married.” But they wouldn't see Jim again for years. The First World War breaks out.

After it ends, Jim visits his friends. Jules and Catherine now have a daughter, Sabine, and live in a small house in the Black Forest. Jim must realize that their marriage is in agony and that Catherine has a lover - Albert. Soon a love develops between Jim and Catherine, which Jules accepts with lasting affection for Catherine. At times, the happiness before the war is even perceptible again. Jim and Catherine's relationship, however, is marked by power struggles and vengeful actions and is further clouded by their desire for a child which remains unfulfilled. Jim has to return to Paris for his job. The letters they send to each other hurt more than they reconcile. When Catherine suffers a miscarriage, their relationship ends.

Many years later, at the beginning of 1933, Jules and Jim met in Paris. In the meantime, Jules lives again in France with Catherine, in an old water mill on the banks of the Seine. Together, they take a trip by car to a country house where Catherine is once again expected by Albert. The two men, Jules and Jim, are not very surprised. During his next visit to the mill, Jim announces to Catherine that he finally wants to marry Gilberte and have children with her, Catherine takes out a revolver. Jim manages to steal it from him and runs away from the house.

A final chance encounter - a few months later - in a cinema. Another car journey, stopping at an inn by the river. Catherine invites Jim to get into the car, she says to Jules: “Be careful now!” She drives at high speed on a bridge which is destroyed in the middle and which does not lead to the other bank. The car crashes into the water, Catherine and Jim die.

Jules at the cemetery. The coffins containing the bodies of Catherine and Jim are burned. - One last time the narrator: "Jules accompanied them alone on their last journey. ... The friendship between Jules and Jim had not found an equivalent in love".
