Description of this John Wayne Movie Poster

Caravan of Fire is a 1967 American western film directed by Burt Kennedy and starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. Released by Universal Pictures, it was produced by Marvin Schwartz and adapted by Clair Huffaker from her own novel. The main actors are Howard Keel, Robert Walker Jr, Keenan Wynn, Bruce Cabot, Joanna Barnes, Valora Noland, Bruce Dern and Gene Evans. The film received generally positive reviews.

Filming took place in the Sierra de Órganos National Park, in the town of Sombrerete, Mexico.

Former rancher Taw Jackson returns to his hometown to settle scores with corrupt businessman Frank Pierce. Three years earlier, Pierce had wrongfully imprisoned Jackson and appropriated his land, including his home and recently discovered gold deposits. Jackson plans to steal a shipment of gold dust worth $500,000[a] from Pierce's "war wagon", an armored stagecoach surrounded by mounted guards. Wes Fletcher, an old wagon driver employed by Pierce to haul dry goods, becomes Jackson's informant. The third member Jackson recruits for his team is Lomax, an arms dealer and safecracker, who previously took down Jackson as part of Pierce's plot.

The fourth member of the team is Levi Walking Bear, a Kiowa translator, whom Jackson and Lomax save from a gang of Mexican bandits. Jackson then sends Lomax to find the last member, Billy Hyatt, a teenage alcoholic and expert in explosives. When the team first meets to discuss their plan, Fletcher brings his teenage "wife", Kate, and flies into a jealous rage when Hyatt gives him coffee.

Jackson and Levi negotiate with the Kiowas; because Pierce is deliberately starving the tribe of their land, they agree to help them. Meanwhile, Lomax goes to town and is approached in a saloon by Pierce, who offers him $12,000 to kill Jackson. Hyatt, intoxicated, enters the saloon and comes close to revealing his plan. Lomax knocks him out and turns him over to the sheriff for the night, then accepts Pierce's offer, but asks for time to do the job.

In the morning, Jackson sends Hyatt to Fletcher's farm. Hyatt finds Kate alone, and she reveals to him that her impoverished parents traded her to Fletcher. Fletcher returns and threatens Hyatt with a knife, but Jackson arrives in time to defuse the situation. Hyatt says he wants to use nitroglycerin for his part of the heist, so he, Jackson and Lomax sneak into Jackson's old ranch to steal some from Pierce. Jackson distracts Pierce by pretending to collect his old belongings, while Lomax and Hyatt break into a safe and grab the explosives.

The next day, Hyatt rigs a bridge with nitro bottles, Levi blocks the war wagon's path with a felled tree, Lomax and Jackson set a trap in a narrow gorge, and Pierce and his guards leave with the gold in the wagon of war. Kiowa warriors create a distraction that briefly draws the guards away from the cart, who find themselves stranded on the other side of a canyon when the bridge behind the cart explodes. Other Kiowa warriors attack the wagon for the gold, but a newly installed Gatling gun forces them to retreat.

The fallen tree causes the wagon to swerve into the gorge, and Jackson and Lomax spring their trap, killing the drivers. Pierce shoots the last two men who try to abandon him, but the second returns fire, killing Pierce. The wagon crashes into a ravine and Jackson's team hides the gold dust in flour barrels on Fletcher's wagon. Kiowa warriors arrive to take the gold, and Fletcher is killed when he tries to stop them. Hyatt manages to use the last bottle of nitro to kill the leader and scare off the remaining warriors. The explosion frightens the horses in the cart; as they flee, the barrels of flour fall from the wagon and shatter alongside a group of Kiowa women and children who evacuate the scene. Unaware that they contain gold, they collect the flour for food.

Jackson reaches the cart first. In a hidden compartment he finds $100,000 in gold that Fletcher intended to steal from his partners. Thinking he has lost everything, Levi returns to the Kiowas and Lomax, furious, takes Jackson's horse as payment. When Hyatt arrives with Kate, Jackson gives them a small amount of dust and hides the rest. When a furious Lomax confronts him, Jackson smugly tells him that he must stay alive until the group meets in six months, as planned, to share the spoils.
