Description of this Duel Poster

Duel is a 1971 American action thriller television film directed by Steven Spielberg. It features a businessman, played by Dennis Weaver, who crosses California at the wheel of his car to meet a client. However, he finds himself pursued and terrorized by the driver of a semi-trailer of whom we don't see much. The screenplay by Richard Matheson adapts his own short story of the same name.

Produced by Universal Television, Duel originally aired as part of the ABC Movie of the Week series on November 13, 1971. It was later given an international theatrical release in an extended version including scenes tours after the first broadcast of the film on television. The film received generally positive reception from critics, with Spielberg's direction being particularly praised. It has since been recognized as an influential cult classic, one of the greatest films ever made for television.

Back on the road, the truck catches up and passes Mann, then blocks his path every time he tries to pass him. After taunting Mann in this manner for some time, the driver waves him over, causing Mann to nearly hit an oncoming vehicle. Mann eventually passes the truck on an unpaved spur off the highway, then glances out his back window and waves it over. The truck slows briefly, then begins to follow Mann's car at an increasingly higher speed, with the underpowered Plymouth barely managing to get ahead of the truck. Mann veered off the road, lost control of his car and crashed sideways into a fence in front of a restaurant, while the truck continued on its way.

Mann enters the restaurant to compose himself. Coming back from the bathroom, he sees the truck parked outside. He studies the customers, identifies one wearing the same type of boots as the truck driver and confronts him. The customer, confused and offended, beats Mann and leaves in another truck. The pursuing truck leaves a few moments later, indicating that its driver never entered the restaurant.

Mann continues on his way and stops to help a broken down school bus. In doing so, his front bumper became stuck under the rear bumper of the bus. The truck appears in a tunnel below the road, causing Mann to panic. He frees his car with the bus driver, and Mann flees as the truck helps push the school bus onto the road.

Mann stops at a railroad crossing and waits for a Southern Pacific freight train to pass. The truck comes up from behind and pushes Mann's car toward the oncoming train. Mann hits the brake and shifts into reverse. As soon as the train passes, Mann steps on the accelerator, crosses the tracks and leaves the road. The truck continues on its way and Mann follows slowly.

In order to create more distance between himself and the truck, Mann drives at a very slow pace, while other motorists pass him. Once again he encounters the truck, which has stopped on the side of the road and is waiting for him. The truck stops in front of him and starts bothering him again.

Mann stops at a gas station where there is an animal attraction, including rattlesnakes. He calls the police from a phone box at the station. During the call, the truck drives through the cabin and destroys it. Mann narrowly escapes and is chased by the truck around the animal attraction. He managed to get into his car and flee at full speed. Around a bend, he leaves the road and hides behind an embankment to let the truck pass.

After a long wait, Mann leaves, but the truck is waiting for him at the end of the road. Mann tries to pass at full speed, but the truck crosses the road and blocks him. He asks an elderly couple in a car for help, but they leave when the truck reverses toward them at high speed. Determined to defend himself, Mann speeds past the truck, which begins pursuing him again. Mann swerves toward what appears to be a police car, before realizing that the vehicle belongs to a pest control company. Mann continues on a mountain road, aware that the truck will not be able to keep up with his speed on a slope. Suddenly, the radiator hose in Mann's car ruptures, causing the engine to overheat and fail. Losing speed, he barely manages to reach the summit. He then goes down the slope in neutral, followed by the truck. Mann spins and collides sideways with the wall of a cliff. He manages to restart his car and narrowly escapes being run over by the truck. Mann walks up a dirt road to the edge of a canyon and turns to face the truck. Mann hits the accelerator with his briefcase and steers his car toward the oncoming truck, breaking free at the last moment. The truck hits the car, which bursts into flames, obscuring the driver's view. The truck pushes the burning car over the edge of the cliff, then continues over the edge itself, and both vehicles crash into the canyon. Blood is seen flowing inside the cab of the truck. Above the wreckage, Mann rejoices in his victory as the truck burns. Mann then sits on the edge of the cliff, exhausted, and throws rocks at the destroyed truck, as the sun sets.
