Description of this Dracula's Nightmare Poster

Dracula's Nightmare is a 1958 British gothic horror film, directed by Terence Fisher and written by Jimmy Sangster, based on the 1897 novel of the same name by Bram Stoker. The film is the first in the Dracula film series. Hammer horror starring Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, Peter Cushing as Doctor Van Helsing, plus Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, Carol Marsh and John Van Eyssen. In the United States, the film was retitled Horror of Dracula to avoid confusion with the Universal Pictures American original, Dracula (1931).

Production began at Bray Studios on 17 November 1957 with an investment of £81,000.[4] As Count Dracula, Lee established the image of the fanged vampire in popular culture. Christopher Frayling writes: "Dracula introduced the fangs, the red contact lenses, the cleavage, the ready-made wooden stakes and - in the famous credits sequence - the blood spurting off-screen onto the Count's coffin. Tim Stanley said that Lee's "sensuality was subversive in that it implied that women might well enjoy having their necks bitten by a stallion."

In 2017, a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics by Time Out magazine ranked Dracula as the 65th best British film of all time. Empire magazine ranked Lee's portrayal of Count Dracula as the 7th greatest horror film character of all time.

In 1885, Jonathan Harker arrived at Count Dracula's castle near Klausenburg to take up his position as librarian. Inside, he is surprised by a young woman who says she is a prisoner and begs him to help her. Dracula arrives, greets Harker and guides him to his room. Alone, Jonathan writes his diary, revealing his true intentions: he is a vampire hunter and has come to destroy Dracula.

Some time later, Harker is confronted by the desperate woman again. She reveals herself to be a vampire and bites his neck. Dracula arrives and takes him away as Harker passes out. When he wakes up in his room in the light of day, Harker discovers the bite marks on his neck. He realizes that he has lost almost an entire period of light. Harker writes a final note in his journal and hides the book outside the castle. He descends into a crypt to find Dracula and the nameless vampire woman resting in their coffins. Harker is foolish enough to kill the woman first, a mistake that will cost him his life. It withers as it ages and dies. When Harker turns to Dracula's coffin, he finds it empty. Dracula, awakened, closes the crypt door, imprisoning Harker.

Days pass and Doctor Van Helsing arrives in Klausenburg, looking for Harker. An innkeeper's daughter gives him Harker's diary. When he arrives at Dracula's castle, he finds it deserted, but he comes across Harker's portrait of his fiancée Lucy Holmwood, whose photos have disappeared. Van Helsing finds Harker in Dracula's coffin in the crypt, transformed into a vampire. He stings Harker before leaving for the town of Karlstadt, where he veiledly announces Harker's death to Arthur Holmwood and his wife Mina, Lucy's brother and sister-in-law, who is ill. At nightfall, Lucy opens the doors to her terrace and bares her neck, which already bears the mark of a vampire bite. Soon, Dracula arrives and bites her again.

Mina asks Van Helsing for help in treating Lucy, but Lucy begs the servant Gerda to take away the bunches of garlic he prescribed for her, and she is found dead the next day. Van Helsing gives Harker's diary to Arthur. Three days after Lucy's burial, an undead Lucy lures Gerda's daughter Tania to a cemetery where Arthur found Lucy's grave empty. Van Helsing appears and wards Lucy off with a cross. He explains to Arthur that Lucy was chosen to replace the woman Harker killed. Van Helsing suggests using it to lead them to Dracula, but Arthur refuses and Van Helsing locks him in his coffin. Arthur takes one last look at Lucy's body and sees her at peace.

Van Helsing and Arthur go to the Ingolstadt border crossing to find Dracula's coffin. Meanwhile, Mina receives a message supposedly from Arthur, telling her to go to the address in Karlstadt, where Dracula is waiting for her. The next day, Arthur and Van Helsing go to the undertaker's house but find that Dracula's coffin has disappeared. Later, Arthur attempts to give Mina a cross, but it burns her, revealing that she is turning into a vampire. During the night, Dracula appears in the house and bites her. Arthur agrees to give him a blood transfusion administered by Van Helsing. When Arthur asks Gerda to go get some wine, she tells him that Mina has forbidden him to go down to the cellar. Van Helsing runs downstairs and finds Dracula's coffin, but it is empty. Dracula escaped into the night with Mina, intending to make her his new vampire bride.

A chase begins as Dracula rushes to return to his castle before sunrise. He attempts to bury Mina alive outside the crypt, but is interrupted by the arrival of Van Helsing and Arthur. Pursuing Dracula inside the castle, Van Helsing fights with the vampire before tearing down the curtains to let in the sunlight. Van Helsing forms a cross with two candlesticks, pushing Dracula into the sun's rays, and he crumbles to dust as Van Helsing looks on. Mina recovers and the cross-shaped scar fades from her hand, while Dracula's ashes blow away in the morning breeze, leaving behind only his clothes and his ring.
